Stickies, enhanced security, etc.
Submitted By admin on 11/05/12
Mars Explorer, admin, Official, PlexPedia

Greetings everyone!

I just added a sticky system to PlexPedia, which will enable moderators to feature the finest content on this site for everyone to enjoy. I also added a new "removed" state for posts, which will make it easier to permanently bury blatant spam and other items that serve no purpose.

Notes:

  • Please don't "bam" things anymore - the sticky system should serve this purpose admirably without adding useless posts to the most important of topics.
  • Moderators - sticky only the very best content, and possibly rotate the stickies if you have a lot of content that should be featured. We should never need more than ten simultaneously stickied items, for example.
  • "Remove" only threads which are completely devoid of value. Most content should be switched to "Resolved" after it's useful life comes to an end.
  • Hearty thanks are due to Achilles - who inspired me to create an official sticky system by building his own automated state toggling machine, as well as reported several important security flaws.

I also just fixed some other PlexPedia oddities, such as the display of "About" pages for usernames with dashes, and several permission escalation attacks that enabled non-moderators to alter the state of threads.

I am currently in the process of consolidating my domain names, web servers, and file servers into several manageable accounts - ATIServer sites, and my personal email account may go down for an hour or two later today.

Great progress has been made on the next Mars Explorer for iPhone, and a release is imminent. I am striving for biweekly app releases for the mext month or two, one of which will enable Whirld support. So - get your block worlds ready and polished, they are about to take on a whole level of relevance!

In other news, the next release of Syn3h (which is still a couple weeks away) should be a fully viable Mars Explorer replacement with finalized keybindings, a perfected GUI, vastly simplified camera systems, and excellent reliability.

All the best,

-Aubrey

Great! I was wondering if you were working on the iPhone/iPod touch app. And will the connection in Syn3h be improved? Because I can't seem to connect to other Syn3h games.

Great! Thanks Aubrey! Can't wait for the next version of syn3h! I just think there needs to be a better way of distinguishing the stickies from other content, also, a hide stickies button would be nice, if you want to just see the recent content.

What happens to a post that is removed? Is it completely deleted from the site?

I like the idea of stickies. It enables mods to keep the important stuff at the top that members, and newbies especially need to see. However, it takes up room for new posts on the front page. I would encourage mods to keep them to the bare minimum. Only the most important or most helpful posts should be stickied, i think that even 10 is too many.

Lastly, i think that members should still be able to "Bam" posts. Some, and most posts that are bammed (Rightfully) are posts that are important or should be read over by the community to start or continue discussion, but i dont think that many of these deserved to be stickied. It is possible to cycle stickied posts that are less important but i feel that it is too difficult and confined. Members should be able to bam posts they feel need more discussion and then let them naturally flicker out.

Can't wait for the next versions, Ipod and computer both! Great work on everything Aubrey.

Edit: looks like removing a post can still be accessed from the Modlog so does that mean it just makes the post writer unable from making it visible?

Removing a post is just to prevent the owner from re-enabling it: "The idea is that moderators remove things, and annoying users don't enable them again" - Aubrey

You are correct about removed posts, it just prevents the original author from repeatedly unhiding it.
No matter how many posts are stickied, only the top 5 will be shown on the home page.
Good point about bamming, I agree. Just not taken to the point of excess :)

I like the improvements very much. Well almost all of them ;)
One question though. If we set a post to Removed, then can we recover it or will a moderator have to recover it or will it be unrecoverable?

I can't stand stickies. When I spill juice on my hands, sticky. Jam, STICKY.

Syrup bottle, pick it up, sticky. Why can't we all just use thumb tacks?

OT: Great addition to the site, glad to see that the good posts can stay up! :D

Well, these are all great improvements, Aubrey, but the thing about illeglizing bamming (exaggerating here) really broke my heart. I must bam, Aubrey, I MUST!
