Retina display support, easier controls, arm6 and 7 binary, and much more!
Submitted By admin on 11/05/24
Mars Explorer, admin, Official

Submitted last week, approved by Apple minutes ago, and appearing in the App Store momentarily!

I plan to release several more updates within the next month - and am already working on the jet, terrain engine support on latest-gen hardware, an integrated level of detail system for cooler graphics on devices that can handle it, game center integration, and streamed block Whirld loading.

Enjoy,

-Aubrey

Paramount:

✓ Mars Explorer has been completely reengineered to run at maximum quality on everything from an iPhone 3G to an iPad 2!
This includes a new resolution independent UI system to keep 2D graphics looking perfectly crisp on a variety of aspect ratios and pixel densities, custom fonts to make excellent use of the iPad's larger screen real estate, universal distribution for native performance on arm6 and 7 chipsets, and much more.
Buy and download once, enjoy on all your iOS devices.

✓ Interface has been simplified and polished to near perfection, with all the buttons and info you need in a single elegant bar at the bottom of the screen.

✓ New visible throttle slider, providing for easier and more intuitive driving than full 2 axis tilt. Control scheme now consists entirely of simple finger gestures - be sure to stop by the upgraded Info section to learn more about them.

Significant:

✓ Now multitasking aware, letting you switch between apps without loosing your game!
✓ New auto rotation system for comfortable play in left or right landscape orientation.
✓ New high-rez, great looking app icon.
✓ Vastly optimized shaders and particle systems for improved performance.
✓ Infinite Horizons! Lava seas blend perfectly into the distant skybox hills.

Noteworthy:

✓ Enhanced "Orbit" screen with cooler particle menu and sharper starfield.
✓ Music silent option now labeled "iPod" to indicate that custom music can be played.
✓ New buggy drivetrain mass simulation algorithm to reduce lurching at low physics sampling rates and throttle positions.
✓ No more rematerializing upside down in hovercraft after you drive off the edge of the world.

Oh la la.
By the way, I recommend that you should lower the price from 2.99 to 1.99 or maybe be 0.99. It's extremely expensive for an app like this.

Oh wow... I got this game like years ago, well maybe less than a year, but ages ago, and yes I used to be on here a lot, and that app was never updated since I got it... until now!!! last update to 1.2 was Feb 16 2009... I though you forgot about this app already and gave up on a mobile version, But it seems I was wrong, or well right until now! haha, so excited for the update, nevermind me

It's an iPod, not a plasma flatscreen LCD HD TV. The game is Awesome! It is one of the best games I have. I got it for 2.99, but that was well worth it. Great work!

Thanks for the free app, Aubrey :D

First off I would just like to say this app is awesome! there's only a couple of things I'd like to see:
one thing is a y-axis sensitivity slider in the settings, as I find it difficult to really get up to speed while flying. also, an option where you can barrel roll when tilting sideways while flying (like in the computer version when you press left or right) instead of actually turning. thanks!
-Grae
oh yeah, and the buttons are kinda small on the iPod touch, and they don't always work when I tap them.

Hey Aubrey,
I don't know if you're ever gonna read this, or actually write down and implement any of this, but here is my exhaustive list of everything I'd like to see from Mars Explorer iOS, and in the future, syn3h touch. This list has 16 things, so bear with me. Here goes:
1. Multiplayer (You're probably already planning on this, but just to be sure)
2. Bug fixes:
a. It can be hard to get out of the water because of the way that the wheels interact with the water vs the terrain, can you clean that up?
b. Also, when I am stopped, and I turn the throttle all the way up on buggy, the steering gets really sensitive until I finally get my buggy to go straight and speed up. Can you change the steering sensitivity to match the speed intensity, not the throttle intensity?
c. Not to be harsh, but the flight physics right now really aren't very good. Can that be made smoother?
d. When going fast on the hovercraft, it can sometimes go right through a terrain. That's not fun.
e. Ever since the new update, the shocks are a bit weird. As I mentioned in my earlier comment, can that be fixed?
3. Change the records section. Again, not to sound harsh, but the transparent trophy is a tad lame. Can you change that? Also, the records could use a facelift (eg instead of just text, put some sort of background or something too)
4. How about online leaderboards? for waypoint tag?
5. Some sort of browser so that us people with parental controls on Safari can still get on the forums with our iOS devices. To better explain it to our parents, make it so that only the forums are browsable (thus providing us with a better argument if our parents see us online). Maybe you could make a Plexpedia app or a Mobile webpage for plexpedia (ya know like urban dictionary and facebook have?)
6. More vehicles, pretty self-explanatory
7. A non-gyroscopic control option (eg joysticks or something) That would make dogfighting in multiplayer so much easier.
8. More worlds (again probably already planned, just makin sure)
9. Downloadable worlds, so that when you don't have internet (when you're in the car or something) you can still play the game
10. Create your own waypoint course: make your own set of waypoints for the game.
11. Can the buggy go underwater (probably already planned)?
12. More advanced in-game settings interface (make stuff slide around or something). It adds to the professionality of the app, making it look more like it's worth the money.
13. When switching from the records to the main menu, the camera zooms in on the trophy. Maybe the camera should zoom out, rotate, and then zoom in on the planet.
14. Different game modes: (eg Calm, explorer, waypoint, multiplayer, crash mode)
Explorer, waypoint tag and multiplayer mode are probably pretty obvious. I will explain calm and crash mode, since I thought them up
Calm: There's another game similar to mars explorer (sorta) on the app store right now. You're sort of a airplane flying over terrain. It advertises itself to be a calming game. I think that's true. I also think that mars explorer could have the potential to be that sort of thing. Instead of paying for two apps, I could just get it in one. Here's the problem: Mars explorer iOS is a high speed, adventure, rugged explorer type game with somewhat sketchy physics and pointy terrain meshes. Maybe if you made the meshes more complex, and the physics better when in this mode, and then slowed the speed of the buggy and hovercraft down, then you could compensate for the extra burden of the complex meshes. When you're trying to relax while playing a game, its nice to just go slow. Let me know if this is a good idea.

Crash mode: In this mode, you only have a certain amount of health before your buggy/hovercraft breaks down. In first person mode, this is shown with windshield cracks. In third person, maybe hearts or a health bar. When the buggy breaks down, you respawn. This might not fit the original idea, which is why it could be a mode you could turn on and off. I don't know if this goes against your peaceful principles or not (that wasn't meant to be an insult :P sorry if it sounded a bit like one).

15. iPad. you should make an HD app for the game. It could have chat and stuff. The difference between the HD and iPod app would be that for HD, everything's on one screen, vs on iPod, the options for chat, etc would be in a corner, and when clicked, the screen would split. 2/3rds of the screen for the buggy view, 1/3 for chat or whatever. Also, so that people don't have to buy the HD app and the iPod app, maybe you could have a code that you get when you buy the HD/ iPod app, and you somehow enter it into the HD app and get the other app for free.

16. Have an iPod and iPad sync, and there's joysticks on the iPod, and they control the buggy on the iPad (see i-Gun app)

All of these ideas would, in my opinion, make the app worth more than 2 bucks. If you ever read this, let me know what you think.
thanks, and see ya,
ffroggy
PS I love this app! Great job Aubrey!

Copy a code, then paste it into the "redeem" place in iTunes. It is the same as if it were a gift card. Chances are they all have been used, and you can only use a code once.

Aubrey, great job!  I have the older version of the iPod version of Mars XPLR on my iPod (my brother's too, and my two iPads).  The reason I say "older version" is because I rarely update anything (57 updates and counting)...  But still!  Really good and awesome app!  :)  Amazing!

I could play Mars when I'm in restaurants instead of having to listen to people talk about completely random stuff that I have no use for.

This is a post for the iPhone version.
Unless you mean the iPhone version.
But I can't help you there if it is.
