After a 24 hour disaster
Submitted By admin on 11/06/02
Mars Explorer, admin, Official

Greetings everyone!

I am terribly sorry about the recent downtime, which had eliminated sites such as Safarri, PlexPedia and MarsXPLR from the internet for the past day and a half. Here's what happened:

1) A couple weeks ago, VPSLink (my previous webhost) notified me that an entity known as SpamCop had received complaints of unsolicited email originating from my server's IP address. They said that I would need to stop sending spam, or my server would be in jeopardy.

2) I replied, and let VPSLink know that none of my services deliver spam - and that the server in question sent emails only to welcome new users and notify them of received private messages. I also scanned the server for signs of an intrusion, and verified that the server was not acting as an open mail relay. All seemed well.

3) VPSLink was again contacted by SpamCop, and instantly disabled my server without warning me first.

4) I pointed the DNS of all effected sites to a status update page, to let users know what was happening.

5) I keep regular backups, but the prospect of loosing everything users have contributed to this server in the last two weeks since the latest backup was unacceptable. After 18 hours of negotiations, VpsLink temporarily reenabled my server to enable me to extract the data it contained. I chose to move this data to a micro instance on Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud, and after several more hours of work, everything was running great.

6) DNS records for all sites were pointed to the new EC2 Elastic IP.

7) The new micro EC2 instance quickly crumbled under the load of everyone checking to see if their favorite sites were back online. I had planned to upgrade the micro instance to a standard instance if this happened, but when I attempted to do this - I discovered that Amazon doesn't support 64 bit standard instances and that I would have to reconfigure a new server from scratch (again). The micro instance performed incredibly poorly, often failing to utilize more than 3% of it's allotted cpu due to some kind of behind-the-scenes throttling that Amazon was imposing.

8) Less than impressed with Amazon's EC2 service for anything other unpredictably loaded applications, I chose Linode as ATIServer's home. I then transferred the latest data to a new Linode VPS, configured an Nginx - fastcgi PHP5 server stack, ran a couple tests, and pointed all the site's DNS records to Linode.

Everything now appears to be working great (even better than it had been performing on the higher specked and twice-as-expensive VPSLink server), no data has been lost, and Linode will provide us with tons of room to grow.

Please let me know if you notice anything broken or missing, I'll be sure to take care of it.

All the best,

-Aubrey

DNS updates are probably still propagating across the net.
Give it a couple more minutes, it should definitely start working any time now.

You can still go to the parkway if you get the app and you find the Geiodo (I think) URL.

Well...to prevent this kind of thing you get the app before hand...
Sorry, I sound like my math teacher now...ugh...but he's nice.
Well, that says something about how many noobs use the browser version, and well-respected players as well. Hmmm...
There are very few people on there now. Wow...
IT'S AWESOME! But it's without the weirdos^H^H^H^Hinteresting people that sometimes entertain you.

The same problem is also occuring with me. I am unable to login to my registered name in the game, and there are very little availble games to play in. However, as we all know, good things come to those who wait.

So that's just what I'll do until further notice.

Everything should have updated everywhere by now. If there's still anything that doesn't work for you, try restarting your computer.

This will clear your "dns cache", triggering a fresh update of the info for connecting to the new server.

Living in the middle of nowhere and accessing the net through a 13.5 mile microwave link does have it's drawbacks though...

I think that's a great idea, Aubrey! I mean, you should rejoin your people again in joyful matramony! Plus, it would be such an honor to finally meet the creator of Mars Explorer. So, I really hope I'll be able to meet and/or discuss many topics with you very, very soon, my friend.

Please, for God's sake, if you're going to do that unneccessary drama thing so many freakin times over, do it right.

Everyone would like that honor - including me. I'd be most happy to play - I was planning on not playing until Syn3h comes out, but I will gladly oblige in this case.

Yeah, well you're lucky Eric. :(
Perhaps it's just one group of people with the same ISP that can't log in. Far-fetched though, but it doesn't seem to be the computer...I have Windows and the others I've met that can't log in have Macs.

Aubrey,

I can only played under my registered name while in browser. The app refuses to accept my password, and is telling me that the servers are unreachable. Perhaps this has something to do with your recent change of server? Other than that, everything appears to be in working order once again.

Please look into this one matter Aubrey, thank you.

With Warm Regards,

Thanks Dude, now I can log in.
You're right. You can only log in for the game.
This gives you an idea of how many people actually /have/ the app and not just use the browser.
Perhaps it's because the browser version has less trouble adjusting to the fact that you changed servers and the app is still looking in the same place.
Yes, I've just personified, I just felt like this was the simplest way to explain it.

My guess is that your browser was mantaining it's own DNS cache, which it why the ingame authentication was broken. Has it started working yet? If not, I'll be sure to look into it this evening.

I just fixed a bug in the server configuration which had prevented large images from being uploaded, and added support for Amason's SES mail delivery service. Autoforwarded message email delivery should now be much more reliable, and less likely to wind up in your spam folder!

One more change: AutoForwarded messages now include the sender's email address in the email's reply-to field. This will allow you to reply directly to messages in your email program instead of having to log into a website to do so, and should also help to eliminate bullying where users would hide behind the anonymity of their PlexPedia account to harass others. I am very excited about it being easier to reply to messages, but please let me know if you feel that this change is counterproductive.

Unfortunately, no. I am able to log in in my browser, however, it is much less stable, and I am unable to host. In the application, I am able to play normally, but "the authentication server is unreachable," and I can not log in.

  1. The browser version is the one I can log into. In the app, I am unable to do so.
  2. The other change is one I don't like. If people know my email, they'll know my name. I would prefer my name to be unknown. I like anonymity. I (try not to, if I have I'm very sorry) bully people. I don't like this because people can find out your real name and stalk you. They can then meet you in person, which might have terrible consequences for you, including rape, and losing computer privileges (yes, that's a terrible consequence too lol! No offense to anyone), death, etc. So please take back this change, and I propose having bullies have this implemented, but if people don't do that then let's not take the risk of such consequences. Thank you.

I agree with Ender. Even though I have disabled the autoforward, I do not like other people to know my name. I would prefer anonymity, and would not like my name going "out there" into the public. Unfortunately, I must resort to not using my PM thingy in the interest of personal security.

Clarification:

The messaging system does not share your email address under any circumstances, unless you reply directly in your email program to an AutoForwarded message.

It is perfectly safe to leave AutoForward enabled, just use the ">> Reply Online" link if you don't want the other party to learn your email address.

Ehhh Aub'z? I like your intention behind auto-forwarding but I believe the negative ramifications outweigh the positive. What of accounts created with an email that doesn't belong to the Mars member and what if they ignore any popup or notification you might create?

Please give the new feature at least louder voice than in these comments or set it as a custom feature rather than default?

Ok. One more question. If I were to PM someone, and it autoforwarded, and then they replied in their email, they would see who they are sending to? So if person X were to PM person Y, and Y autoforwarded to his email, could Y press "reply" and when typing his draft, see person X's email?
