Mars Explorer, PointyBagels, Community

The way some of us on Mars are acting at the moment is completely and entirely unacceptable.  There are huge arguments that are no longer about anything, they are only about who is right.  I am going to politely request that everyone quit acting like whiny babies and quit it.  If your post is hidden, then it deserved to be.  Don't go whining and saying that the mods are incompetent, fascists, or anything else.  We are not trying to infringe upon free speech.  We are doing, to the best of our ability, what we feel needs to be done to keep up the site.

Some of the new users feel that the older users are getting preferential treatment.  This is most likely not true.  If it seems that way, it is probably because the older users have been here far longer and realize what seperates a quality post from complete garbage.  That being said, if older users do get preferential treatment, deal with it.  When you've been here a year, perhaps you will have the same leverage that they do.  The best way to attain that kind of leverage is to behave yourself well.  If you cannot do that, then reconsider staying on this site.

That being said, I propose a new set of forum rules, based on Flyclub's, that would go something like this:

  1. Make sure your post is mars related. This forum is not for non-mars topics
    • This means that links to random or unrelated websites will not be tolerated.
    • Spam posts are not tolerated.
  2. Posts which are for "Clubs", or "Groups" will be placed under deep scrutiny. If the moderators dub the post or group to be unsubstantial, the post will be removed.
  3. Keep from pointless posts!
    • Posts which are short, or convey a stupid or unlikely idea will be removed.
    • Posts which are used as public PMs will be removed after 24 hours or less (Depending upon content and relevance)
    • Posts which are for any other reason dubbed pointless will be removed.
  4. Do your best to use proper grammar.  It is understood that not all people here speak English as a first language, but do not blatantly use unreadable grammar and spelling.  Put some thought into and look over your posts.
  5. Posts which contain any form of inappropriate content will be hidden. The creator will have a chance to edit the post and remove such inappropriate content from the post and republish.
    • If the post is too obscene, it will be removed.
    • If the post is fairly mild, a warning comment will be issued before hiding.
    • Cussing is considered inappropriate in exception to: Damn, crap, and "wtf". Keep wtf short and unspammy.
    • Vulgar and/or explicit images or text of any form is considered obscene.
    • Excessive capitalization is considered mild Spam/mild cussing!
  6. Make sure world and vehicle ideas are: Descriptive, well formatted, and somewhat likely to be added or executed!
    • EX: "Make a dragon robot" is: Not descriptive, and iNCREDIBLY unlikely. It's not even relevant to mars!
  7. Flaming is not tolerated! Keep it friendly, or risk comment/post removal!
  8. Meta-Posts, or, posts about the forum itself, or the people on it, will also be placed under deep scrutiny.  If it is thought that a post will create drama and arguments, it will be removed.
  9. Arguing over something that is not Mars related with little or no reason will not be tolerated, any attempts to do so will be removed.
  10. Do not publicly dispute any decisions made by the mods.  Any attepts to do so will be removed.  If you feel that a mod acted out of turn, take it up with a different mod or Aubrey.
Any attempts to argue for it's own sake will be removed in this post.  However, you are welcome to debate and discuss the rules I have provided and suggest for me to add/remove some.

Starting very soon, it won't only be in this post, but I will be removing all of these nonsense arguments everywhere.

Everyone agrees on this, now.
You forgot one category, though: Sketchup/Unity/Blender/Modo/etc models.
We should have rules concerning those too.

I will sticky it after the rules are completely agreed upon.  At that time I will also remove the two paragraphs at the beginning, so it can be more universal.

What would be you guys' opinion on some sort of quality control rule.  It would state that a reply would be hidden if it is only like 3 words.  And eliminate replies that were not well thought out enough (for example, not even a sentence long)  It would reduce the amount of comments that say things like "lol yeah", or "I agree"  or other replies that say very little.

Yay or Nay?

Well, you can add to a discussion while only saying one word.
You can indicate your support of an idea, and when you don't say anything to an idea that you have nothing to add to, then it will look like the idea has no support and only opposition.

The rules don't need to be stricter in order for people to behave appropriately... that just leads to more and more rules. The people just need to behave more maturely and politely, If this were the case no rules would be necessary at all.

That doesn't make sense. I would sat this: "I propose an eleventh rule: you are not aloud to post something that has already been posted, unless it is an improved one."

If they can't find a sticky, they can't find anything else, I intend to either have flyclub update his rules, or put this up myself.  The issue is they view "new to me" and no one comments on rules.

Its a very good post that needs to be up on top. It explains alot about how we as players of Mars Explorer should act and give respect.

It says to follow and obey the rules and to be civil with one another instead of having random conflicts that you forget was all about later.

It is a great post, and therefore should be on top. :)

It's no different from clicking "I agree" to a EULA or something.

Hey! That's offensive! I read EULAs...

And I think that we should add something like a "thank this post" if someone agrees but doesn't want to elaborate, with the number of times "thanked" and you could view the list of people who thanked if you wanted to.

I dont like it either. Plus if you think about it, how many people do you think would listen? They would post something and then a mod would hide it. Well that newb or n00b would be like "wtf I just had a... wtfreak happened?!?!".

So, they would then keep posting random stuff which could most likely be spam which is nothing we want. Another thing is, your not a government.

For example:

Say you were new to the game and you had to read all of the rules and posts here on the forum and then you had to go to another post just to sign and say that you accept to follow them.

Thats like when people move to one country from another and then they have to go through alot of studying and they have to pleadge and sign a paper saying that are now a citizen of that country.

Basically like saying your now property of that place in a way.

  Another example is:

A job. You sign a contract saying that you will follow all the rules. That IS saying you are property to that buisness, because they can hire you, fire you, and can transfer your paperwork to a diffrent buisness for you.  Its also like school in the same ways.

Folks, we have rules here, they don't get followed, your posts get hidden.  That's the way it works.  This seems to be a good way to make the mod's job easier.  I honestly don't care if my hiding someone's post hurt his or her feelings or not.  If I hide a post, it deserved it.  You act like if the rules are less visible, they wont exist.

If it won't work, what do you suggest?

  • 1 week silence
  • Ban (sometimes)

Why not have it so that after creating an account you are shown the rules, and you need to wait 3 days before you can comment, and two weeks before you can post. It seems drastic, but if people read around and are familiar with the forum before they post, then a lot of this junk being posted could be avoided.

Well, people can get around that by not visiting the forum for three days, or not visiting for two weeks.
We should have the new people see the rules, yes, but if they look at the forum they may get the wrong idea...

What about an intro thing? Sorta like an interactive, that shows how to check messages, how to log in, etcetera, including the forum and the rules (emphasized). Also, no option to skip it.

If that won't work, then I like the simple make them agree to "Forum terms of use"

A "EULA" is an E.nd U.ser L.icense A.greement, that you check a box that says "I have read and agree to the terms of use".

About mods and admins...

Maybe 10 of the players would even be eligible for modship. Even less would be for admin.

I do not like these rules. I am making a formal complaint about this document. I shall think about hiding this.

ok forget about me hiding it, but i really don't like all these rules. The more rules there are the more rules there are to break. And there are like 124 rules or something like that here. At least at first it looks like that. And besides, who reads the "agree to terms sheet" anymore? And the video idea without the option to skip? That's bad 2. They would just walk away from the computer for a few minutes or something. That's what i would do.

I suggested this long ago to Aubrey....

A "Goof" category with very relaxed rules and a button to hide it while browsing real stuff.

A "Pro" category with mod ability for temporary but escalating member ban to enforce VERY hard rules.

Everyone would win! Otherwise Syn3h will never attract a heavy gamer crowd as I know it could. Nossir, not with this forum.

Large Crowd = more noobs

we already are having problems with our small community, so imagine what it would be like then?

I personally prefer it being a small community where everyone knows everyone also ;)

Look at places such as the Mario Kart Wii forum - they are massive and yet have almost no problems at all, due to awesome mods and a good system.
We are having problems with certain idiots, yes, but with a stricter system and more people actually playing online, this could be reduced too.

I've said before that it's not the size of the forum that's the problem.  It's the lack of an adequate moderation and sticky system and forum layout, and a very low average age of a forum visitor that does us in.  We mods are basically almost powerless here without bans.

This forum was not intended to be used the way it is used at the moment.

The temporary banning idea is a good idea, but it will be a problem choosing worthy candidates–unless it's a universal feature for mods.

Ive always liked this idea. I think they should have a a right to ban/silence someone to up to 1 week.

They do that on another game I play and the game is great with the moderation system.

There alot nicer too.... just saying.....

"Aubrey chooses mods"

Has anyone seen Aubrey lately? Cause I don't think he's on here every day. :/

We're overly dependant on Aubrey. Not saying he shouldn't be the top, but there should be a better administration system than a single person who never is online. Just saying.

There's a few people who I would nominate for admin status...
