Yeah, it's a crash, and yeah, I need help.

Mars Explorer, ChrisPerson, Community, Other

Recently, I tried playing Mars explorer on my new computer (Alienware M11x, I'll put in the specs), and I got an error message titled "Fatal Error in GC". My graphics card driver is updated, so that's out of the question.

My system is almost certainly not at fault - it's not even a year old, and it has some decent power.

Oddly enough, I can play Mars Explorer without a crash, as long as I am hosting the server and nobody else besides myself is on it. If someone joins, it crashes. I can play Mars without the crash in a full multiplayer server if it's windowed. If I go to fullscreen while on a server, it, well, crashes. In short, my multiplayer is disabled in fullscreen, which is extremely annoying.

Specs/Misc. Information:

Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 540M (1 GB memory0
RAM: 4 Gigabytes
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
Processor: Intel Core i5
Mars Explorer Version: Windows downloadable.

If you know anything about this, please help. I have already found 1 thread about it, but it was similar only in the fact that it was a crash involving the GC error.

EDIT: I got the error message this time. The title is always "Fatal Error in GC", but the text is sometimes "GetThreadContext failed", and at other times, it's just white. Worse, it has started giving those error messages (and crashing, because Mars must hate me...) in windowed mode too...

EDIT Mk2: Not that it's entirely related, but Syn3h does it too. That's dissapointing.

Hello CP, regarding marsxplr.com, it's "meta-site" plexpedia.com was temporarily unavailable for everyone.

Regarding the downloadable game application for Mars Explorer and for Syn3h - These have not been updated for a long time for Windows or Mac and should not be expected to work properly. I cannot use the Mac version of either game and it's the same for many other people that have turned to playing only Mars Explorer in browser.

If you decide to use browser you may need to try different ones until you find what works for you as there is no set formula.

I will try again, seeing as Plexipedia was down. I have already tried the browser version on Firefox (fully updated, Unity player included), and got the same "Fatal error in gc - GetThreadContext failed" error message.

EDIT: Just tried on browser and app. The app still doesn't work, and neither does the browser version.

Uh, no. I don't do that. I program batch executables for Minecraft (no, not viruses, an actual helpful program), and that's about it. But why do you ask, and why does it matter?

An old rumor two years back that a guy named chrisperson hacked people on mars.

Hence the part about it being a rumor. Besides, who would want to hack Mars servers anyways?

Aside from that, do you know anything about the GC crash?

It sounds a lot like a graphical overload, but it's too new for that.

I'd suggest switching the networking in the server settings above the settings I/Q to simplified or ask the person to switch it if you join. It might not work its just a suggestion.

I know of at least one person who had a similar problem to this, and if you google it, you'll find plenty of topics, whether it's mars explorer or not. I have noticed that few of them have something to do with Kaspersky, which I do have. While I see what I can do about Kaspersky, I'll test the Simplified setting myself. Thanks for your help.

Chris you should focus on one of the two problems at a time.

In my first comment I did say to try more than one browser which is what you should do to at least play.

If you want the help you asked for please read our suggestions carefully?

I do read all suggestions carefully, but using the browser version gives the same error, no matter what. Also, the only two browsers I have are Firefox and Internet Explorer (which I would drop the computer equivilant of an H-bomb on, if I could). On top of it all, whenever I've used the browser version of Mars, it runs slowely. I appreciate your suggestions, but I am afraid they are out of the question.

Keep trying! Chrome browser costs you nothing and works well for some.

Or try disabling all add-ons / extensions in Firefox.

I know about Chrome, but disabling alll addons and extensions for firefox disables Unity player too... Besides, I wouldn't disable AdBlock plus for anything short of a supercomputer.

Google Chrome, firefox, application, they all crash this way.
There.

Installed Google Chrome - Check. (installed adblock too, because screw ads)
Joined Multiplayer server - check
Crash time: about 3 seconds.
Uninstalled google chrome - check. I can't stand Chrome. Don't ask why.

Please see my reply to Stryker's reply. Or, to be more simple, Chrome crashed about 2 seconds sooner than either the app or Firefox.

A possibility from the Unity Forum
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/45286-Fatal-error-in-gc-quot-GetThreadContext-failed-quot

"I then went to the Kaspersky support site to contact Support -- it immediately suggested that I upgrade to the very latest version of Kasperksy, so I did: Internet Security 2011, Version 11.0.1.400 (a).

NOW THE ERROR IS COMPLETELY GONE. I have even removed Unity from Kaspersky's Trusted Applications list and I no longer get the error."

I have Kaspersky PURE 9.1.0.124. I just bought it it March 2012, so it's highly unlikely that it's out of date. That quote came from a comment that also said this:

"Finally, I uninstalled Kaspersky altogether -- Voila! The error disappeared."

As for unistalling it, that is completely out of the question. I will try exiting it first - I am not willing to remove my antivirus protection for the sake of Mars Explorer.

(Don't tell me about those free alternative such as Malwarebyte's Antimalware or Microsoft Security essentials. I know about those. Kaspersky is the best I've ever used - it's effective (removed several infections [real, not false positives], and it doesn't slow down my computer like Symantec software does.)

Not to worry CP, the way you resist suggestions I won't "tell you about those free alternatives" nor will I tell you anything more about what might actually work since I've only been here four years and have (with the help of others) only solved several seemingly impossible game problems by being open to suggestions no matter how unlikely-to-work they sounded. I was trying to assist you to play the game not get into a discussion about what I should and shouldn't tell you, and not to list off possibilities for you to snub and not to be scolded about how you don't like Chrome or what's out of the question. Your lack of cooperation is frustrating at best and so I leave you to find your own way despite the less-than itty bitty fact that it was you that asked for help.

That wasn't what I meant in that comment. I was not trying to tell you what you should and shouldn't tell me, I was just saying that I already knew about free antivirus programs, and things similar. When I said that unistalling Kaspersky was out of the question, I meant what I said: Nothing is going to make me unistall Kaspersky unless it starts BSoD'ing my computer. My apologies for the misunderstandings - my comment wasn't that clear.

About the suggestions thing: I am not resisting anybody's suggestions. I have actually carried out all suggestions. I am even in the process of updating my AV, as you suggested. I appreciate all assistance, yours included, Kruncher. I am aware that you have a lot more experience in these matters - as I said, I am not trying to resist anyone's suggestions. Again, sorry for the misunderstandings, but I really would like to here your suggestions.

For the record, I am aware of the less-than itty bitty fact that it was me that asked for help.

You know what? Screw it! Kruncher, you're awesome! The Kaspersky update worked great, and so does Mars (as well as everything else on my computer - it all sped up for some reason). You have both my gratitude and my sincere apology for doubting you in the past. Well, to everybody who participated in this thread, thanks for your help!

Great, now I'm the jerk again. Hah hah no, that's ok, I'm used to it. :) I was indeed going to suggest removing Kaspersky but only long enough to discover if it was the problem then move along to the next test or whatever.

See you on the game and hopefully no hard feelings. lol
