Mars Explorer, smek, Feature Requests

I was looking at one of pb&j's posts a while back about the hovercraft, and an idea sprang into my head! (I dunno why...)

For switching the vehicle, we could still have that tab thing that says "Switch Vehicle" on it, but I think this would make it cooler:

When switching vehicle, maybe your vehicle could be only one vehicle and when you switched your vehicle it would kind of transform into what you want it to be. Like if you're a buggy and want to switch into a tank, maybe the buggy would become larger and 2 more wheels would pop out the middle and then the wheels would take the shape of the tank wheels and go on from there.

I hope to hear all of your positive (and/or negative) replies to this feature request :D

50 sketch up vehicles slowly flashing by, like an animation....neat idea

hmm! This sounds interesting!

It is definitely possible, through a number of methods:

The most visually appealing method would be to add a ton of extra vertex data to all of the vehicles, that would serve no purpose, and not be visible during operation -- These extra data vehicles would simply be stand ins that would appear for the morphing. Because all the vehicles would then have the exact same amount of vertices (the points that make up a shape) a simple lerp code could be configured to move the vertices over a period of time to their position on the new shape of the vehicle. After this is done, any wheel popping ins or popping outs could be taken care of, and then the entire thing could be replaced with an actual tank, not just a tank-looking buggy

The cons of this method are that it is intensive on the GPU, and particularly intensive on the CPU. Upsides are, it's a perfect morph

The next one down would be to just move hte vertices the buggy all ready has, then at the end, replace it with a tank model. It wouldn't look all that great though, because the buggy stretched out over a tank would just look weird, and you would still see a sort of jumpy transition. It's not that much less CPU intensive either, however it's easiest on the programmer

The final method, having been suggested above, would be to simple make a bunch of pre made vehicle shapes that would be quickly played through like an animation. This has great potential in that it would not lag the CPU or GPU, but it would be VERY hard for the programmer and/or modeler.

I love the idea! It is definitely possible, it's not easy, but still possible. Maybe someday Aubrey will implement this, or, perhaps someone will implement it for him -- The 3D model of the tank and buggy are both publicly available, as with the jet

Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!! :D
So what you're saying is that it is possible, but it would make it laggy??

Mostly it would just be very challenging, lag depends on how it's implemented, really

One other way of doing it would be to simply rescale the buggy and other meshes so they look about the same size as what you are switching to -- Crappy, I know, but it is very quick and easy to program, and some fun effects could be added

How would the buggy turn into a jet and vice versa? o_O

That sounds like a really awesome idea but in practice is it practical?  As flyclub said, it would take a lot of time and effort and would lag loads.  Other than that it would be pretty cool! ;D

Haha like a 3D animation? If this was real then it would be soo cute. Watching the lil buggy transform into a tank. Eh heh heh. *wipes tear*

Off topic: I am pocketMad and this the first and last time I am announcing it.

oh?

well, okay guys, if you want. i always thought it would look more like the vehicle disintergrating and reforming to what ever you chose.

That is a good point but I think morphing would look cooler!  Nice gif btw! :)

I think that would be awesome, but I think it would be even cooler if you could just press a button on the keyboard and it transforms into a different vehicle.
j = jet
h = hovercraft
b = buggy
t = tank
Just an idea.
