Mars Explorer, flyclub, Documents, Mars Explorer 3.0

Personal Notes:
Hello, everyone! Mars Explorer 3.0 Build 04-05 is now ready and available!
Sorry for the massive delay in posting, yesterday was a long day... Tried to pack too much in and ended up having to push off the release to tonight. I will be away for the next two days, so you will probably nto see any more update for a bit.

Without further ado.....
Download:
If for some reason you do not want to, or cannot play the game its self right now, here is the image gallery! :)

Gallery:

Release changes and notes:

The major goal of this release was to fix one bug, and one bug only. The bug I ended up fixing was a major one -- crashing upon world unload. After that was fixed, I began work on some "minor features" which I hope to include in every release.

I am pleased to announce that smart collisions are now optional and disabled by default! This means that a load of old glitches are now back, and, resetting in a world with a strange spawn won't get you stuck. It will instead launch you several hundred feat into the air, but... it's a start.

I've added a couple other features, but they are, shall we say, secrets. I'll let you all try to discover them :)

Now, let's look to the future for a moment...

There is a lot to do! Major design goals before 3.1 are:
  • Whirld block and text-based data loading
  • All new networking system
  • (Possibly) fixing of pink areas in worlds which used old shader code
  • Forum system for the new release
After that, the first official version of Mars 3.0 will be released :)

Not to worry though, if any of these goals cannot be attained between updates, I WILL still be spending some time improving little things here and there.

Summary:
Known Bugs:

  • Non-host players can no longer view server settings -- This is on purpose and only temporary.
  • Wheels on buggy invisible on Fast-(Eric)
  • Wheels on tank render strangely on Good+ (Etah)
  • Shaders from worlds made for Unity 2 do not render properly on Unity 3. No fix is known. (Flynn)
  • When chatting, one must click the game to regain control of their vehicle (Etah)
  • No lava can be seen (Aperover)
  • Whirld text files are not being loaded by the 3.0 Whirld importer.  This may be the cause of many aforementioned or undermentioned. (Numerous)
  • World spawn points are not used.
Features:
  • Smart Collisions are now optional and disabled by default!
  • Two new secrets :)
Bugfixes
  • Game no longer freezes upon unloading an asset bundled whirld file
  • Game now runs in the background! This means if it is not the topmost window, it will continue to run.

Changes:
  • Rearranged the settings panel a bit for more clarity

Resetting in a buggy on Dvo's Candy mountain in build 4/5 is impossible. You get jitterstuck in the terrain.

So does in Freestyle.

I think the different spawns is an attempt to have multiple spawns like in CC. If that is implimented, there has to be a different way to switch vehicle.

Thank you Flyclub! There is one notable bug that was not fixed: lasers explosion sound is heard throughout the entire map.

Also a suggestion that should be quite easy to add in: add "Rate of Fire" setting for vehicles.

Rate of fire and parrarel fire would be next. (fire from both sides of hovercraft shooting at parallel crosshairs.)

I'd love an I/O setting of rate of fire....
Hmm..."GATLING GUN! 600 rounds a minute!!!,
Take THAT you stupid jet noob!

THAKATHAKATHAKATHAKATHAKATHAKATHAKATHAKA

Yeah...this could be a bad idea.. ;)

I am not entirely sure why that is... It seems the sourcecode I was given wasn't actually mars2.22 but more or less... mars 2.23 -- My guess is it was the state of the code at the exact moment that Aubrey decided to rebrand as Syn3h. This naturally means I have found NUMEROUS very strange and conflicting logic in the same algorithms, missing data, variable transference to the same variable that must be transferred to in order to be transferred to (right?) It's just odd.... Could very well be one of those bugs.

A couple more suggestions:
Bots should have names randomly chosen from a list, and preceded by "bot_". Some possible names may be:
"bot_Wolfram"
"bot_Curiosity"
"bot_Apollo"
"bot_Jupiter"
"bot_Astronomer"
"bot_Nobody"

Beautiful and Fantastic settings should have more interesting laser hit effects, I'll post an image soon

And regarding my previous Rate of Fire suggestion, tanks should have reduced rate of fire, but as compensation should have a space bar function - I don't know what it should be, maybe a tractor beam?

Interesting idea with the bot names! It wil lhave to be considered :)

As for more interesting laser hit effects, I was thinking about adding laser marks later down the road -- good idea keeping it in fantastic and beautiful -- or at least graphics settings related!

I think tanks already have a special advantage. The original idea was that they fire less often than buggies, but get to fire sniper lasers instead of normal lasers when they do so. I am not sure if something like this is wise to do a second time to the tank, but good thoughts nonetheless! :)

Flyclub,

I have an idea that I have always wanted to see in Mars Explorer, but has never been implemented. I realize that this may be extremely difficult to do, so I won't blame you if this idea is ignored. The idea for this was originally suggested by GTR34 in his post entitled: "The Buzzer: Scout Vehicle + 3D Model!+ New Idea!". This idea proposed a scout vehicle that could attach to the buggy and detach at the user's will. The scout would have a laser that could take the quarry and/or record a player's position. This way, if the fog is on very high, the player would know where his "target" was at all times. This original post can be accessed here.

Around one year later, GTR34 made a second post about this idea entitled: "MicroDrone UAV: The Buzzer II + Unity Web Player Demo". In this post, he expanded on his previous idea, and created a Unity Web Player Demo to allow viewers to fly his new MicroDrone. In this post, he stated that the quarry's position could be recorded with a tiny microlaser so that the player could always know what direction the quarry was in from their current position. It could also be used for CTF spying/scouting. In this post, he proposed some technical specs, which can be seen in the original post here.

When these posts first came out, I was very excited that this could be a part of Mars Explorer. Gradually, though, I began to see that it would probably never be implemented into Mars Explorer. Now, we have that chance to add this incredible feature. What do you think?

Sincerely,
Apophis

P.S. Keep in mind that the content in this post is in no way my own idea. It was all proposed by GTR34 in his two posts, and I did not contribute to those ideas. Credit for this idea goes to GTR34, and to GTR34 alone.

Interesting idea! Sounds like a major gameplay change, and the strategic implications of such a change will have to be considered by the committee, but it does have the potential to add a large amount of strategy! I like the ability for the drone to attach to any vehicle it so pleases.

In fact, here is what I am tempted to suggest to the committe:

A drone vehicle, which can fly around and attach its self to any surface, including those of other vehicles. The drone would be very small and therefore incapable of moving very quickly, so it would e strategic to have another friendly (or even enemy) vehicle chaperon the drone to its drop off point. This would, of course, imply that the drone is a separate vehicle. Players can see the location of all drones onscreen at all times.

This would remove the need for drones to have lasers, as, of course, they can simply mark locations themselves. Drones would be visible, but significantly less so to enemy vehicles.

A theoretical expansion to this strategy is that drones are not capable of chatting. They instead must "make it back" to base and switch to a new vehicle in order to relay information via the chat. This would then mean that they respawn at (and reset to) the nearest spawnpoint, NOT the nearest friendly spawnpoint. If spawnpoints are laced strategically in a map, this would mean that a player could "gaurd" the drone, keeping it locked in that spawnpoint constantly. Other players would spawn to a random choice of the two closest spawnpoints, to allow for "breakouts" where a number of members go in and free the drone. Of course, spawnpoint choosing, whether drones can talk or not, whether drones have lasers, etc etc etc etc would theoretically also be server settings, allowing for innumerable strategic possibilities. :)

But again, all of that stated, it would be a major change to the gameplay, and must be run by the committe. Further, it will not be worked on right now, as the main goal of this release is to get everything working properly.

Wow, looks very promising. I don't have the time to go through and download the unitypackage right now (kinda why I left :P), but the screenshots look great. I as well have a suggestion to make about future versions of Mars Explorer:
the Submarine/boat. I have seen a couple boat models as well as a trial, but I was thinking you could get into a lot of very interesting situations with boats/subs (eg underwater worlds, boat races, etc.) I know Gub has made a submarine world, (although it was never exported). So here is my official suggestion for submittal to "the committee":

The potential of whirld is unlimited, and it's potential is not fully realized in the current version of Mars Explorer. It is for this reason that I, the late ffroggy, bring to the table a new option: the submarine. Conventional Mars Explorer vehicles have never worked well in water (with the possible exception of the tank), but water offers so much potential for navigation, exploration, as well as the expression of beauty. A submarine/boat would have the capability to move on or under the water (the space bar would switch between the two in my idea), plus the transition in-between submarine and boat could be accompanied by a corresponding animation. It would be able to fire much like a tank (although adjustable in the settings I/O), due to the tactical disadvantage of not being able to go above water. It would be fairly fast, but not unreasonably so. The submarine boat would add an entirely new dimension to Mars Explorer, as well as allow Mars Explorer to take advantage of all the opportunities that whirld offers.

thanks flyclub for all you're doing here! I look forward to the end result with much anticipation.

Hi....just had a quick idea about mars' future....possibly an option for team play? Sort of like...capture the flag! Or family it (if you know what that is?). (rocks of avoi would be a good capture the flag map, ready kitted out with flags!!).
I was thinking that this would add a more tactical side to the game?
Thanks

Hello!

I noticed that, when I downloaded this upgrade, that there was no icon to match it. So, I came up with an idea for one. In the "Fun" Folder of Aubrey's Mars Explorer Source Code, there is the Mars Explorer Logo in .png format. The colors involved in this logo are mainly orange and green. For a new icon, why not keep the picture the same, but invert the colors? This would also symbolize the fact that, opposed to one person designing it, anyone can (almost the opposite of what it was before). Here is my new icon idea:

My Idea for a New Mars Explorer Icon

I do not know why the colors glitched up on me, but you get the idea. If you really want to download the logo (without glitched colors), I have placed a copy in my Dropbox and you can download it here.

Let me know what you think!

Sincerely,
Apophis
