Mars Explorer, flyclub, Documents

Hello! Today, I am actually bringing a half finished themed update.... You see, I was planning on making an update with a builtin world -- This world would have a planet in it, being observed by a space station, as it get blown up exactly when it turns the 21/12/2012... However, it turned 21/12/2012 *today*! aaaandd, like a certain OTHER apocalypse I know... it looks like that just isn't going to happen :(

However... I did put alot of work into a *secondary* feature of the world. You see, the planet is actually spherical, and the space station has artificial gravity : D

Unfortunately, that's about as far as it goes -- I did not end up haivng enough time to get *anything* up to snuff... None of the vehicles have gravity independant logic yet, the minimap is not gravity independant, the forcefields cause sharp changes in gravity (and therefore camera angle), and the planet is the only object that got textured... I didn't even get a chance to smooth the normals on that darned thing :( There are probably nerly a hundred thigns wrong with this update that, given more time, I would have loved to have fixed. However, unfortunately, time was not on my side!

So, think of this as a super duper buggy preliminary test phase of the kinds of custom gravity that you can expect in the future -- Not the hugest update on the planet, I know, but it was only ever meant to be a themed release anyhow! Thankyou to Abister and Eric for creating the code that the gravity system was originally based on! :)

ALSO... we kind of skipped an update, sorry about that... Here are the download links:

Change Summary:
Bugfixes:
  • Mostly Fixed Pink shader bug! Let me know if you find any worlds that are still pink
  • Fixed Upd system uses wrong URL (Flynn)
  • Fixed Resets do not reset to the spawnpoint (Flynn)
  • Fixed certain mesh worlds not loading (LAMP, IBCF, Etah)
  • Fixed a few miscellaneous code errors (Flynn)
  • Fix speedlimit (Panzerace)
  • Fix terrain stuck (Flynn)
  • Make negative max speeds indicate no block (Flynn)
Known Bugs:
  • Collision modes to do not default to correct mode
  • Non-host players can no longer view server settings -- This is on purpose and only temporary.
  • Oceans render a strange bluish white (Numerous) (No fix is known for this)
  • Hypersound has very small range of speed (Please take credit, your name was not written down)
  • Xorbs are not animated, render strangely (Flynn)
  • Smart collision causes players to become stuck (Numerous)
  • Shockwaves speeds behave strangely (IBCF)
  • Omnipresent sniper shots (IBCF)
  • Bots exiting and entering cause quarry to dissapear (Numerous)
  • About 304 TODOs left in source code
Changes:
  • Slightly adjusted max speed to go to -2 instead of -20 mph
New Features:
  • Shaders working properly
  • New collision detection modes:
    • Full -- What 2.22 uses, never deactivates, may cause you to become stuck
    • Anti-Stuck -- The same, but deactivates when you are detected to be stuck due to collision detection
    • Activated -- Same as Full, but only when you are likely to move through things
    • Off -- Smart Collisions are never activated
  • Added "Update I/O box:" -- Sometimes the IO box takes forever to update. I haven't had a chance to look into the behavior, but it is now a TODO. In the mean time, this forces the box to update :)
Contributers:
  • Eric Lujan (Falloff Altitude)
  • ACE/Starmute (Laser Special Effects)

Accessing the Apocalypse World:
I will personally be hosting a server in the apocalypse world, but if you want to access it yourself, just use "2012" as the world url :)

P.S just to keep you updated on the licensing for Open Source, I am still looking into it, I have some ideas but I need to look deeper

When the time comes, Aubrey will graciously replace his game link with ours on this website's play page. Therefore, we can advertise the forum in our game and the links will take the players to the correct forum.

That's a good question! The general plan is to fix networking after the holidays, and then we can officially release 3.1 :)

I have no idea when that will happen, but hopefully as soon as possible!

Quantum and I just had quite a fun time launching ourselves into orbit around the spherical world.  Great work!

Artificial Gravity!!! This is awesome! Does this mean we will be able to have spherical worlds?

Type "2012" into the custom world slot.

It is a blender made spherical world with artificial gravity.

Maybe you can create your own thing like Unity to make the new Mars Explorer?

Stryker, have you seen how many guys it took to create Unity? They are all professional. I have dabbled around with a bit of raw OpenGL code, there is NO WAY you will get anything as good a Mars with that on a team of what - four guys? The physics, networking, rendering, compiling, building, etc is all done by Unity.

Have a go with Unity, see what it does for you someday. If you can do anything remotely resembling a Unity game without Unity, I will humbly resign to a job as a toilet cleaner. My Dad has taught programming at a high level for more than ten years, he's taught me a thing or two. Let's face it - you get to like matrices.

Making my own Unity is on my dream to-do list though. :)
Maybe a word processor first. :D

The old 2.x had a bug where the turret didn't move for me. YOU FIXED IT!!!!

Initially I thought you hadn't done that much, and aside from bugfixes and a new laser hit effect, I can't see too much that is changed. I guess it's all behind-the-scenes. Great job though!!!

Sometime I wish I could join the team, but I have my own unity projects. Do you have a mobile version planned? I could work on that as a just-for-fun project as I have both mobile versions. :D

What do you mean - a multiplayer iOS app?

I guess it would be possible, I'll have a look in the Unity scripting manual and see if they say anything.

Please try to avoid refering to iOS as Apple, as I have a Mac running OS X, which is also an Apple creation.

Edit: According to the manual, all the Network-related code should work on iOS and Android. It's also possible to find out whether the device is using 2/3/4G or WiFi, and react to it. So multiplayer on iOS is definitely possible.

Hello, Ace! I am not really 100% sure how a mobile version will work out, with mars already being available as a payed app

That being stated, you (and anyone else who wants to) are welcome to join the development team! If you have a project you would like to work on, please just let me know!

Hello!

As I said, I have bought myself both of the non-pro mobile plguins. I understand that there might be problems given that an app is already available - after all, we DEFINITELY don't want to go stealing money from Aubrey! - but if there's any chance of an Android version, I'd love to make that happen.

Thank you! ^^

Thanks guys! The community has always been the best part of Mars Explorer! I went to play to relive my childhood and it was all down, but I found this on the forums. Has the old hover mode for jets and my favorite world, GTR's Ice World! I really appreciate all you have done so far and I will definitely stop back sooner than the years I was gone.

P.S. Do the servers work? I could totally get together with a bunch of the original gamers and play! I have two old contacts still!

Welcome back “Airmail333”. I'm not sure if the networking system in Mars Explorer 3 works (I think it does), but Mars Explorer 2.22 still works fine. If you need any help or want some colloquialization, the martian community has moved to Terrium, the in-development successor of Mars Explorer.

Mars died a long time ago. Go to terrium.net it's the new mars. The game itself isn't finished but most the mars explorers went to those forums. The game itself should be done in a few months.
