Mars Incompatible with OS X Mavericks / Yosemite
Submitted By ibcf on 13/12/20
Mars Explorer, ibcf, Community

As Wolflink has noted, Mars Explorer is completely unplayable on OS X Mavericks. Stick with your Lions and Leopards, folks!

EDIT: Wolflink has a (semi) solution.

EDIT 2: Phenomenon has more possible fixes in the comments.

EDIT 3: At this point, the best option is probably Flyclub's Mars 3 Build. It cannot connect to the regular Mars servers, but you should be able to join people who are also using Mars 3.

Mars Explorer 3 for Mac

Mars Explorer 3 for Windows

EDIT 4: Lamp has a fully functional solution! Check out his post!

Unfortunately this came a little too late considering I updated to Mavericks yesterday morning :(  I looked up how to downgrade from Mavericks to Lion, although it looks rather difficult... ugh

I made it work in Mavericks. It was a simple problem to fix, and although the result refuses to lock the cursor making aiming impossible, it works fine for chatroom use that we all just LOVE. And also ramming, but nobody does that.

I will not, however, be sharing the method and/or products that I used to make it work, since it involves a simple modification to the application - something that you would call hacking. Because that's always a bad thing and you all taught me that.

There will be a few exceptions to the above paragraph.

Don't give up on it though, it's a simple solution that I'm sure someone better inclined towards the community will find it - I'll respond to any PMs if you want nudges in the right direction. :)

Even if you don't care about losing support for Mars on your operating system, I would advise not upgrading. It has several extremely irritating core audio bugs, such as volume keys not working for minutes after waking, or insta-muted sound. Overall I don't regret upgrading, but the main "plus"es for me were mainly developer-related changes such as refined XCode UI and better support for less well-used things, but for a common user it may be more pain than gain (obvious similarity, anyone?).

I don't like the new Xcode! It runs a lot slower than Xcode 4 on my computer. Sadly, I cant downgrade other than by torrenting Xcode because you can only download the latest version from the Appstore.

Hi ceejrab,

Syn3h doesn't have networking yet, so it is impossible to play with other people.

You can try playing Mars in WINE as explained in WolfLink's post, or you can try _ACE_ and TheCyberMan's successor game, Terrium (still in development), or Flyclub's aborted Mars 3 builds, which have semi-functional multiplayer.

Is any progress being made toward networking on Syn3h? Or at least an official patch for mars explorer to run on OSX Mavericks without having to hack our application bundles?

Not sure if this will interest anybody, but i just tested marsexplorer in CrossOver 13 for mac, and it works perfectly. Installed the windows version with crossover, and it joins servers, mouse lock works fine, everything runs smooth just like on a windows computer (only better, cause its on a mac! haha). Just in case someone else finds that useful.

PS: You can get crossover for mac as well as a bunch of other awesome apps for just $7 at www.stacksocial.com. Its a mac bundle theyre selling for very cheap right now, only a couple days left i think. (Im posting this on april the 24th by the way)

Also, WineBottler will do a similar job, although i have not attempted that. Aaaand yet another alternative would be to use the freeware VirtualBox for mac and install Windows directly and play mars from there, or install Ubuntu Linux in VirtualBox and use WINE to play the windows app. All kinds of alternatives, but crossover has been the easiest for me. To say the least, i can now run any windows program i desire!

All the Best,

Thanks for that! But there are some exceptions of Windows PCs being better than Macs, especially if I build them... ;)

haha yes theres sweet PC hardware, but without Mac OSX... LOL

No we cant play mars explorer in browser from Mac OSX Mavericks, it will just say theres an error. Sorry :(

In Crossover, i didnt need to modify any settings, i downloded the windows installer and chose to open it with crossover 13. When crossover opened, i simply clicked install at the bottom right and it does all the wine bottling and so forth automatically and added it to my launchpad as an app for me. From there it works great! You say it crashes, but what exactly happens?

Pretty much as someone else described...... I down loaded cross over etc....loaded up mars... works great sometimes I can play for a fair amount then the game just freezes....sometimes  it happens in a short time....not predictable at all.
Ether way it is fun to jump around Mars Explorer since I have not played in a long time.

As others have mentioned, I downloaded the window's version and used WineBottler to be able to play. The bad thing about it is how unpredictable it is- somedays I can play for maybe 45 minutes before it lags and then crashes, whereas other times as soon as I open it there are problems. Does anyone know what in OS X Mavericks that changed made it so that we can't use the normal version?

Lamp's solution was to create a partition on his Mac hard drive then install OS X Leopard from disk. I believe I will update to Yosemite then give this a go myself!

My bottle is even better than WolfLink's! It works almost exactly like the native Mac application! I believe this is the best method.

Fully Functional! Less lag, fullscreen, no crashing, and the cursor works properly!

I have become impossibly weary of workarounds and am leaving Mars Explorer with a heavy heart. Many thanks to everyone for working to keep it going. Please view my profile for details and my goodbye note.
