Can it be back?
Submitted By awesomedude5678 on 14/04/27
Mars Explorer, awesomedude5678, Community, Other

  Hello all,
Today I was checking some ATI profiles, and I saw that many of the people from the Golden Age have been playing recently (eg Thecyberman). I think that if all of you started playing again, then we could make mars like it was in the Golden Age. Please tell me what you think.

Your Fellow Martian

---EDIT---
I realised a problem. For example, if I come on, I look to see if any dogfighters are playing. Maybe if we started joining servers more people would play

I don't want to disappoint you, but the chances of this is kind of hard.  We are all older now and have more responsibilities.  I agree with you, I would love to see everyone back here again.

But we need to create a new age because the Golden Age is not going to come back.  I thank you for doing some research and that you wish things could be better, but maybe you can help create a newer, and better age.

Just a thought.  :)

So.. Diamond or Platinum age? At any rate, telling some new people about mars could breath some life back into the community! Any other practical ways of building a new era, anyone?

We could do the Stone Age, and all run around wearing animal skin clothes.

Although maybe something a little newer would be better . How about the. Slightly tinted green gold age! I thin that's what we should call it!

awesomedude, thanks for your's and everyone's efforts to support Mars Explorer. It's still a fun game and I believe that Moonwalker's comment is accurate.

I've asked Aubrey a couple times to do some basic repairs like a fully functioning app but it's a ton of work and it seems he's way too busy. There's also the Mavericks OS factor that prevents so many potential players from experiencing the game. Often times the Mars Widget is downloaded when a new Mac is purchased but with Mavericks installed, Widget does not work.

Maybe we can try by going on the games and not getting into fights with anyone, or trying not to swear too much.

I have to say though, I haven't really seen too much of this, but it is still a problem. We could just try to encourage others to not do those things.

guys, im gonna be entirely honest, getting mars back to how it was is gonna take "REAL" work by us, specifically foot-work... cuz likie, those noobs aint gonna train themselves, i mean seriously... all we do is sit around here and go, "i wish we had the good old days" (myself included, not trying to point fingers) BUT, if you guys really want mars back, then show it and start training some noobies up, i will do the same, i remember back when i was a noob, if it hadnt been for narnia, then, i would still be a noob and heck, i prolyl wouldnt even be playing this game, this is the type of game where noobies dont wanna stay around unless they actually wanna get good... and as moonwalker pointed out, part of my respect for narnia came through the non-cussing that narnia said or not said i guess... so yeah, i agree with Moonwalker, cussing should be left to either 1) noobs, or 2) good players who are dfing alone. :P

Well, there is a rule to not swear at all. However, what if it was just allowed for a game with a password? I'm not even entirely sure about that, but I feel pretty confident in saying that we are not going to be able to get the swearing to stop.

We have discussed this issue for years, but we can look for a way to minimize it, or to come up with a small solution. So, only in a game with a password, or if everyone agrees. You should never swear or say anything mean, insulting, etc. to hurt someone, or if you are just joking.

If you want to prove you are mature, don't prove it by saying something just because your mom walked away and you think it will be funny. (I know, a weird example, but that is kind of what happens, at times.) Just don't do it. Simple, straight, and to the point.

I think Yeah is right. We should just train the noobs, or tell them about dogfighting and encourage them to learn more. On games like Halo, people don't train you, you just learn yourself, and eventualy you will become a pro. On games like this people have to tell you how to become a pro. So let's just tain the noobs.

You know. I actually have an idea for this game...

I thought, you know, maybe we should make it more explorative, and more combat-wise.

This is my idea: We should make Mars Explorer able to allow us to actually Exit our vehicles and, in the form of a humanoid alien or what not (and the color of the character would be the same as the color of the vehicle we exited), we can shoot other players for Quarry like that with the main weapon that's given to that character. You know, it'll be like actual Martian warfare. And when we exit the vehicle, it should stay there for at least 2-5 minutes before it disappears and re-spawns at the starting point.

And, while the vehicle laying dormant there has no one to drive it, it SHOULD be susceptible to being destroyed by another person's Buggy, Tank, Hovercraft or Jet.

So, yeah. That's pretty much the gist of it. What do you think?

I will say, i LOVE the idea, but with all due respect, i think everyone has thought of it, the problem with the idea is, no one acts upon ideas of the Martian people, whether 1) they dont want to or 2) they just plain cant. So YES, if someone can manage that, be it in Terrium or now, then thats great, but ideas like this have come up ALL over the place and no one acts upon the ideas. :P

Very interesting idea, ectoshock. Though it would be hard to put that in this game, it would take some serious work and, without AubreyFalconer it makes it even harder. But, there is however whirld 5 We could sort of make like a new Mars Explorer. I don't know about you guys but I've never been a big fan of those stupid looking aliens with the giant brains and small bodies, what if we made sort of like a robot, like something that looked like a sparten (from Halo) It doesn't need to be violent or anything. You could put it into whirld 5 and make a Mars Explorer based game. I don't know much about whirld but I plan to learn more about it. What do you think?

Yeah, that's exactly like I was thinking of! Like, character/Martian wise, it'd look like a soldier-view from the game Halo.

Or, from Call of Duty - whatever floats y'all boat. :P

Yes, COD or Halo, either would work. Though I think maybe something futuristic like Halo would be cool, since Mars is sort of futuristic since none have ever actually visited Mars. YOu might be able to open up the scripts of COD4 or BO1 I have both for my computer, you might be able copy the scripts of the character on to mars explorer. Would be hard, but definitely possible. Also I saw your edit to this post Awesomedude, I agree some of us just come on and look if any other people that we know are on, we should start hosting games.

You can open scripts for any game by finding it in finder and right clicking it. It might be coded over though, since I haven't looked at cod scripts yet. But I have set some binds up, so I can have like god mode and noclip. I think I can open the scripts up the same way.

Ecto - Play Carbon Combat, you'll like it.

COD guy - no, viewing the contents of an app is not the same as having its source in most cases. So you could in theory clone the app bycopying the contents, but you can't take bits out selectively (aside from images and sometimes 3d models, but taking them out and using them is illegal)

Oh okay. You can still open up certain info of the game though. And I wasn't' saying steel there models and scripts for mars explorer, cause I know that's eligel I was just saying get, ideas from it, and use some of the binds.

binds != code
By "binds" I assume you mean keybinds. That will just be a file recognised by the game that tells it what keys to look for.

Sighhhh. All I'm saying is that ecto's idea was a good one. And binds or as you say key binds, can be used for modding the game. Like I set it up with like bind 9 "give_raygun or there are others too.

Re: Golden Age

But that only works in games that support it intentionally! I'd have to write a whole load of code to interpret bind files. And Unity has its own system for keybinds, anyway, which is far easier to use.

As for Ecto's idea, I think it isn't great at all. It's a cool idea, but would completely change what the game is about. Mars is "vehicular".

What about them? If you want to add anything to Mars, just download the source code and add it yourself. All you need is your own server and a copy of Unity 3 (or you could use the Unity 2.5 source that I posted, and Eric and I made together, which is compatible with Unity 4. You'll have to search for that though)

There is nothing you can't add to Mars, at least in theory. You just need a server and a way to get your new version to people (dropbox works nicely)

ACE - I do understand where you are coming from.

Yes, Mars is a Vehicular game and Always should be. But, it's been like this for the longest time, and just look at it this way: This Shortage Of Players Gave Mars Cancer, Bro.

I was thinking that my idea, as complex as it may be to achieve, may be just what we need to give it a new twist and attract more players to play.

Recently, there have been more players than before ever since my return, only from my perspective, and which is good, but we need more.

I'm not saying that my idea should be definite, but it should seriously be considered.

Re: Golden Age

Ecto, a few things.
- Carbon Combat does it already, complete with Halo-esque player models. Carbom combat has less active players than this place. Yes. Less.
- Feel free to add it yourself. Don't tell other people what they "should" do; you 'should' work out how to do it yourself!
- Adding more stuff to a game that doesn't work on more than 50% of the original players' computers will not save it.
- Breaking the theme of this game would break the game.
- It is not a very complex idea, at least programmatically.
- Capitalising Every Word Does Not Make A Sentence Better, Only Removes The "Caps Got Stuck" Excuse.
You want to save Mars? Get players back? I made that possible, with the 2.5 source. All you need is a server and you could have Mars 2 exactly as it was but working on every modern computer and have cached world loading thrown in as a bonus. You could add upgraded 3D graphics and better shaders, new gameplay, whatever. That's right. All it will take is one person.
"But why don't you do it, dear Ace who always complains?!"
Because I'm working on something bigger, an 'improved and extended' Mars rather than just a fix. (Yep, as an "improved and extended" version we are taking ideas for that, just not from rhis forum)
I am not going to protest if anyone makes a version of Mars with your idea, Ecto. I don't think it's perfect, but I don't deny it would be fun to play for a while. Just like CC.
There is a reason that it will never make it into Terrium, though. The reason is a whopping big one. Don't ask what it is though, my answer will be no.

Would that whopping big reason be something to do with keeping mars non-violent and family friendly? At any rate, how does one train a noob? Actually, thinking about it, no one ever really trained me. Probably explains why I suck at dogfighting, eheheh.

But noob training. My suggestion is a guide to noob training from someone who knows how to mars, if anyone is skilled enough and willing to do that.

Ok gang, here's what ibcf, LavaLamp and myself have been doing for the last year or so. This strategy produces less than 1 new dogfighter per month but we believe it's the most effective way to represent and support Mars Explorer.

1) Host no-nonsense servers with stable settings (I should do this more myself).

2) Offer newbie warriors a challenge that they can handle by allowing them to get some hits on you!

3) If they insist that you "Stay on the ground!!!!" introduce them to the thrill of chasing the quarry.

4) As you repeatedly see a newbie on the game, saying "hi" and "bye" acknowledges them and will make them feel welcome.

Sadly, the game is basically almost broken so please discard your theories about why Mars Explorer isn't popular and maintain low expectations for reviving it. The Golden Age of today is that the game list hasn't yet gone black.

@ firespeed

If you're hosting to promote actual gameplay IE laser tag or racing, stability is more important than settings being default or custom. imo.

WATER UP! WATER DOWN! NO GRAVITY! GIANT XORBS! Hard to learn the game in that environment.
