This is for users of Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or newer, as the original game no longer works.

The original Mars Explorer 2.22 does not work on Mac OS 10.9 and newer, so here is an alternative version that works. It is the MS Windows application bottled with Wine, and packaged to look & feel like the original Mars Explorer. It's pretty much fully functional, except that players may have problems connecting to games hosted with this app. It may take a little while to load the app.

346MB Disk Image; hosted in Google Drive.
If the above doesn't work, try the alternative version which is archived with ZIP instead.

Tip: If you already have Wine installed, save some space by using Mars Explorer for Windows instead.

Well, I don't expect you to fix this Lamp but I'm having a problem that, sometimes players can't join my game. Also LavaLamp reported he couldn't join your recent games.

Huh...

Someone should host a dedicated server or something like that that is always up so people can play.

I hosted in Safari (no cursor aim) but I can't join my own game with your new app (with cursor aim) without killer lag.

I give up on Mars Explorer and am trying out "War Thunder" and "Sky Gamblers - Storm Raiders".

Trust me, Lamp. Storm Raiders is worth $5 and easy to get started playing.

War Thunder is fancy but extremely complicated.

Both are great games and both have tons of players!

I just remembered I still have about $5 credit from a gift card so I can buy it :D

Yeah I don't like really complicated and fancy games. Storm Raiders looks nicer and simpler like Mars Explorer.

I've been playing War Rainers and Storm Raiders and they are cool. Storm Rainders is a little too simple... especially with the flying physics. War Thunders is much more spohisticated and has better physics and amazing quality. Ironically Storm Raiders is $5 and War Trunders is free.

Also kruncher here is a similar game that may interest you:

Cool Lamp! I agree on all counts. Storm Raiders though is nice & quick to get it, get a dogfight and get out. They both have their advantages.

And... SPEAKING of advantages, have you discovered War Thunder's Replays? :D
Yeah, full movies of your combat missions can be replayed from several views including any player's perspective. Hanger > Menu (top left) > Replays
I'm pretty much test flying planes in War Thunder because I get slaughtered within a minute or so in battle.

I'll check out air wars this weekend, thanks.

In War Thunders I just click buttons to get playing and skip all the bla bla I see, for now at least. There's so many features... research and crews and other random things that pop up on the screen. There's a lot to it!
The War Thunder launcher even functions as a torrent client, to download the game and updates, and upload/seed to other people! Very cool!
This is the game that should cost $5! Heck it should cost more!

Also check out some of the other Martian Games.
He made a few games: Motor Wars, Motor Wars 2, Martian Wars, Air Wars, and Motor Toons. All the rest of the games are just copies from other places. Motor Wars is like Mars Explorer/Carbon Combat. Martian Wars is like Motor Wars but also first-person shooters and air planes combined in one game. Motor Toons is stupid, don't bother with that.

By the way, my name in War Thunders and Air Wars (and all other Martian Games's games) is "poiihy". In Sky Rainders it is "Lamp" (i may change this).
What is your name in War Thunders? is it "kruncher" or "Kruncher221"?

Hey Lamp, yeah War Thunder has a lot of stuff. However, when I tire of getting slaughtered in public dogfights, I spend some time learning the other options.

I figured out:
1) how to add friends (ibcf) (PanzerAce) (Etah)
2) how to switch planes
3) how to do test flight
4) how to do free flight
5) how to configure mission manager
6) how to create practice dogfights against bots. The biplane bot swarms are AMAZING!!

I checked out air wars and it's actually pretty cool. I'm staying with War Thunder and Storm Raiders though and will probably eventually play only War Thunder.

I think this summer could be big on War Thunder. Some Martians that did play WT but stopped might be convinced to start playing again. And my joystick will arrive soon!

There sure are a lot of Lamps on WT! Who knew? I'll add poiihy
My nick on war thunder is kruncher and I ain't saying who I am on Storm Raiders until I get some skill (which has been non-existant) :D

Yeah Storm Raiders is worse than War Thunders in every way. It's still nice but the biggest problem is the very crude physics. I don't think it should cost $5. War Thunder is the one that should cost money! xP
Storm Raiders is very similar to War Thunders and has a lot of similar features... I often get them confused. It's probably better to only play War Thunders as that is much better and also needs more time to learn it.

Have you looked at Storm raider settings? I have graphics on highest and it isn't crude as you describe it. Not perfect but pretty darn good.

*SIGH* ... My copy of War Thunder corrupted today. I deleted everything to redownload and now some error pops up in the launcher which prevents me from downloading a fresh copy of the client. Swell......

The graphics aren't all that crude; it's the physics that is crude. When you press an arrow key it instantly turns at a constant speed, then when you release it it instantly stops.

My bad Lamp, I had graphics on my mind. Agreed, the physics are crude & the plane is sort of rigid on Storm Raiders.

But it looks like I will be playing only Storm Raiders until War Thunder patches.... Feels like Mars Explorer.app all over again. Do you feel like Winebottling War Thunder.exe ? After all, I think that's what the developer's client is anyway.

War Thunder in Wine wouldn't run as well.

I recommend you use something like AppDelete to search for all files of War Thunder and delete them, so nothing conflicts when you install.

Also look at this! I flew through a tunnel in Storm Raiders! I didn't make it to the end though, the round restarted before I got there.

In fact, I used AppCleaner to delete all WT files before attempting another install. I will repair permissions with hopes that helps.

Nice screenie! BTW, H key hides all the controls & dials for cleaner pictures.

Oh yeah that's right.

Hey kruncher if you want I can write you instructions on how to install Windows Embedded on your machine. Then you could get access to the clock speeds of your GPU and modify them for better performance. I use MSI Afterburner instead of Nvidia control panel as it is simpler and shows a temperature graph.

I boot into Windows on the weekends for games and OS X on weekdays for other stuff.

Thanks Lamp but I figured things out. The WT launcher only offers "error" but the bittorrent method gave me the message that I didn't have enough disk space, sooo...

In WT launcher, I clicked "Vsync" which downloads less items (HD stuff) and squeeked war thunder back onto my compy, and in a fraction of the download time the full client takes. Yosemite on partition is experimental for me until I map app compatibility, iOS versions and other things. If I went all Yosemite, my ancient iPhone wouldn't sync with iTunes, for example.

Anyhoo, War Thunder Vsync works and I dogfighteded'd? in the Alps tonight! I am back in the sky!
