Native applications, server settings, and more...
Submitted By admin on 09/04/02
Mars Explorer, admin, Documents, Official News

Greetings everyone!

Today I am announcing the release of Mars Explorer 1.9.5, which represents a significant advancement to the 1.9 beta series.

Enjoy,

-Aubrey

(Note that fancy installers and things aren't currently included, but are planned for the final release)

Paramount:
  • Built with Unity 2.5:
    • Now available for download as native Mac OS X and Windows applications
    • (hold the Option key on your keyboard when starting Mars Explorer to access the input mapping settings if you want to completely customize your exploration experience)
  • Improved performance:
    • Tons of the optimizations that were developed for Mars Explorer for iPhone have been incorporated in the desktop version
    • In some preliminary tests, playing as a buggy with 10 bots in freestyle at fast quality on my (integrated graphics chip) MacBook jumped from 15 FPS to 30 FPS between 1.9.4 and 1.9.5!
    • The iPhone buggy has also made it's way to the fast desktop rendering level
  • Server settings:
    • Server hosts now have the ability to control whether bots can fire or drive, whether anyone can view a minimap, if lasers are allowed in the game, and if player name badges are "camoflaged" (new feature: hides badges unless your mouse cursor is near the player, allowing for a much more stealthy game)
    • Look for the ability to customize every aspect of games - including vehicle physics - in the (hopefully) near future!
    • Want a completely new game experience? Try a Freestyle game with no lasers, camoflaged badges, everyone as tanks, and enjoy an awesome game of martian tag!
  • Enhanced physics:
    • Better laser hit detection - especially up close
    • Tanks now properly detect track collisions - much more fun for tag!
    • Buggy has a new vehicle and terrain collision model - including less terrain bouncing, and a higher inertia tensor - which provides for more controllable high speed offroading
    • Buggy's flight model now includes smoother and more powerful wing flaps, vastly improved airbrakes, tighter turns, and new blended sideslip model for much more graceful wing deployment when not pointed in the direction of travel
    • Better buggy lava physics - including more skipping, easier lava takeoffs, slightly more powerful seafloor exploration, and faster surface cruising

Subsidiary:
  • Hopefully better networking: Games with a (*) next to the "Join" button in the server list don't require NAT translation, and should be more reliable to connect to. If you have problems joining any games, please try enabling "Force NAT" in the networking settings box, and let me know if it helps
  • Game settings now apply much faster when joining a server
  • Color coded minimap markers - You are blue, quarry is green, and everyone else is white
  • No more lava "flicker" at lava / terrain boundaries
  • Mica's two sound tracks are now available to select as the in-game music. Server list music now properly mutes when in-game music is disabled. Don't ask about the new audio option labled "hypersound" - someone was having a bit too much fun and got carried away...
  • Much more intuitive and friendly messages throughout the list interface
  • Cooler game logo intro
  • Tagback time set to five seconds instead of three
  • Tanks motors inverse power when you reverse direction - allowing you to make even sneakier dodges :)
  • Reset and rematerialization timer - MacDane
  • Lasers now travel through lava surface in both directions
  • New "DST" readout displays your distance to the quarry
  • MPH now indicates the actual speed of your vehicle in Miles Per Hour

Actually, i find the buggy's flight to be as fast if not faster if you take larger flaps.

OK I just tried a higher game setting than simple and got more flying speed.  I still prefer 1.94 or 1.91 buggy flight dynamics though.

What really came as a disappointment to me was the "loose" feeling of the flight physics. It no longer is fun to quickly bring in your wings after swooping out of a tight turn or sharp incline to propel yourself into a spiral or seemingly out of control flip and perhaps dash within such closeness to the ground that surely any pilot would bring a change of pants for piece of mind only to eject your wings at the last possible second and come out with a swoop and signal your fellow "quarry-men" who watch with awe as you just performed the most awesome display of a bezier curve in a trail. Instead, it stalls when you re-deploy your wings. Ya, that's my complaint.

I adore everything else in this update, and I must say, good job! Well done, indeed.

I feel that it is good that it is an app but the app crashes a lot. Also I dislike the flight. It is very hard to take off and hard to pick up speed. Nothing seems to have improved other than it becoming an app.

Ok! Well...This version, to me, sucks. Aubrey seems to have added some new shiny features and has gotten rid of the GOOD old ones we had. i.e- buggy flight is a MAJOR take away. 1.9.4 buggy flight, again in my opinion, was the best EVER. This buggy flight just wreaks. As others have said, my safari crashed but not within minutes or seconds, about 10 minutes or so and old versions did that as well so im not gunna complain just yet about that. I do like the laser options and other of those features but again, wee need a strong base to the Christmas tree before we add the big golden angel topper. Besides that, i noticed not much difference at all in the game. What i would have expected is a more developed Fox Holes world and maybe a moving Sea Monster, at lest put a non moving one in lava racer, Maybe a closer-to-being-finished tank. I like that the hover cannot shark so easily anymore but it still has a HUGE speed advantage and to me makes it just a bore to use and play against. my big issue was the buggy flight and i think this version id more or less a gold gilded cra....you get the idea. But who am i to say so? Prove me wrong.

Well, after several hours of playing 1.9.5, I do not like it, Buggy flight is all but gone in the fun department, as air braking, and closing in the wings to turn are all but gone. The buggy reminds me the white buggy from 1.0-1.3, very poor flying, very good handling. Aubrey, did you by any chance try to make your own buggy again, and build it off of Forest's buggy, if so, you just made the white buggy red, that's what it honestly feels like, flying is no fun anymore. Also, server changes within a server need to go, as some people can get carried away with them, I suggest making it where they have to set the server settings before they even start the game, and make it where they can't change them at all once the game begins, however, keep the player boot list functional during the game. My other complaint is you worked on stuff that didn't need fixing, and ignored some stuff that did, such as sniped laser, it still sends me back to the front of my buggy when i enter it, the tank needs work still, and the sea monster needs much more detail. I do however, apreciate you trying, but go by this saying "if it ain't broke, don't mess with it". You basically screwed the buggy up, when the 1.9.4 buggy was fine, the fun in flying is gone. Aubrey, please, I know this is harsh, but it is critisiscm, and good or bad, you can learn from it, please learn from this.

Eh, i agree in this case anyway about "if it ain't broke". as for server changeds in server, i PARTIALLY agree because it makes it a hassle if people want to change it and it jsut gives some freedom but ont he otherhand, poeple MIGHT use it for their advantage like, no lasers when theya re quarry and lasers when they are, but when again, why be in a server with those kind of people?

for freedoms sake (this is America), how about a server setting change limit? Two options there to keep that down, a limit to changing it in servers, or bar it from being changed in servers, ultimately it's up to Aubrey, but it can't kill him to at least consider these ideas.

I most thoroughly enjoy a good game of hide and go seek for a refreshment midway through a quarry war entree followed by some tea-potting for desert garnished with some deep clam diving. Please, no drooling. *Tucks hanky under collar and grabs a fork*

in short, i just dont think this is worth the title of a version of its own, even for a beta. It's lacking in the important stuff and even trashed some of the important ones we already had! That doesn't make sense to me.

Criticism is great! It shows that people care :)
All the best,

  1. Buggy flight speed: The 1.9.5 buggy should fly at least as fast as the 1.9.4 buggy - it's just much smoother. You should notice that the wings don't "snap" between their up and down flap states anymore - this is because I have a new smoothing system in place that averages your vertical input axis over time and uses that for determining your wing position. Hint: the input axis ranges from -1 to 1, with zero being neutral. Forward thrust is based upon a multiplier of the absolute value of your smoothed vertical input axis, as long as that value is less than 1 - meaning that the most forward thrust is generated when your wings are very near full flap. Take larger, more graceful strokes - and you should notice yourself accelerating quite nicely. (MacDane's keyboard will hopefully survive a bit longer as well...)
  2. Buggy wing activation sideslip model: I have had feedback from players who thought it was unrealistic for a buggy's travel direction to change instantly when deploying it's wings, and I have to agree with them. However, I can understand that this unrealism could be useful and fun for certain flight tactics - and this will be a server option in future game versions.
  3. Hovercraft: I haven't done any work on the hovercraft in 1.9.5, and the 1.9.4 hovercraft physics were far from complete - look forward to neater hovercraft physics in future versions. Poll: Should "sharking" even be possible in a hovercraft? I would appreciate Spiffy's comments on this, but I feel that the hovercraft's excellent speed and versatility on the surface of Mars makes a great case for leaving the rule of the seas to the soon-to-come submarine.
  4. Input mapping is only available for desktop applications - so if you are playing in a web browser, holding your option key while starting won't do anything.
  5. Server settings should absolutely be configurable by the host at any time in game. More features for server hosts that are coming soon - such as the ability to kick unruly players out the world - will add even more power to the host, and I believe that it makes perfect sense to give hosts the authority to exercise that power at any time they see fit. Do you feel that a server host is exercising their power in an distasteful manner? No problem! Start your own game, and others who feel the same can join you. As a clarification, server hosts will have no power outside of their own game - and inside their game, they will have no power that will give them a competitive advantage over other players (other than something blatant like adjusting the tag rules every time they become quarry - which would be obvious grounds for finding a different server to play at).
  6. Crashing: Yes - crashes do happen, but I'm working on it. I am sure some day Mars Explorer will be completely bug free...

Who told you it was un-realistic? *Cocks laser* "Lock and load, baby!" :p

Just a question, how would anybody know if it is un-realistic to quickly change direction when you re-deploy your wings on Mars with liquid ion something or another wings? Have they seen it done before? *Thinks for a second...* "Nope."  Meh, you do what you want, a server option would be nice, but for now, I'm battling it out in 1.9.4

There seems to be a small bug when hitting the ground flat in the buggy at moderate speeds (30-70). It basically just halts it's momentum and lightly bounces at a dead stop.

As for my opinion on the hover, welp, let's see, I agree about the submarine being the head-honcho at the depths of the Red Lagoon. This will sound odd, but maybe, instead of diving when it catches an edge in the lava, it flips upside down so you can shoot at what's below. Eh, eh? Eh?

Oh! One last thing, I had an idea for a game. The good ol' classic Marco Polo. Yes, there could be the X Y Z position display that Clubby made (or something like that). A switch under the server settings would engage the game, it would clear the screen of the mini-map, names, and DST. It would aslo make it so whenever someone comments their X Y Z position is displayed after their name. So, when someone says "Marco" everyone else says "Polo" and you could look at there X Y Z and know where they are. IDK, it would probably take a little getting used to, but it might be fun.

I'm not sure why, but getting in a laser fight with Aubrey just doesn't sound like a good idea :P

Marco Polo sounds cool, but I think the gameplay you are describing would be very similar to what I had in mind when I created the DST indicator: Server host turns off minimap and camouflages names, and everyone gets to play hot/cold with the quarry!

Hovercraft flipping upside down? Woah! I never would have thought of that...

And the real focus of this comment: I have some flight model additions already implemented 1.9.6 which I am sure everyone will be excited about...

It would help if, like the camera, you had specific points on the physics that are most popular, and moreimportantly, BE ABLE TO SAVE THOSE CHANGES! In 1.9.5, i have to reset this every time.

so i am guessing that the example you gave in the top of "a Freestyle game with no lasers, camoflaged badges, everyone as tanks, and enjoy an awesome game of martian tag" so the everyone as tanks part isnt up yet?  version 1.9.6? or have i just not noticed it?

o ya and buggyflightwise i think that 1.9.1 was amazing.  A little fast, but great.  if u think its something else, try 1.9.1

hm...i think buggy flight was best in 1.9.4 and i don't care what anyone else says about hwo realistic it is. As for the hovercraft, uhh...Im at a blank. As of now, the hovercraft is at a HUGE advantage and just isn't fun at all for me to use as my vehicle or to play against.  As for "sharking"...I wouldn't miss it so much but i think it should have some limited lava movement. The original "sharking" method (going to lava edge, driving off and back into lava at a slower alt) seems a bit goofy too me but the new way is just cheap in a  way. I can't think of a way to balance the hovercraft in fun vs. fair catagory. Sorry :(

as for the player boot, there needs too be some easier way to do it besides typeing their full name...the names may get very confusing. this may require a name recognition where you write part of the name and it comes up with possible solutions or you have a list of people with an "X" next to their name.

Fly;

Running too hot, you say? The only way that could be possible is if your computer has a hardware problem - it shouldn't be possible to melt a computer by performing computations on it. (And yes - I used to have a computer that did that - if I didn't keep ice packs inside the case while performing intensive tasks on it, the screen would go black and it would emit this shrill whistling noise :)

1.9.5 is much more efficient than older versions - so if anything, your computer should run cooler at any given quality level than in previous versions. If you feel like giving your computer a break, just drop the quality level till your computer is running at the temperature of your choice.

The download scares me when it crashes because it doesn't shut down, it just stops and i cant do anything (I end up going to the force quit menu). i think a biggy for me, aside from the really important stuff like buggy flight and such, which is now becoming more customizable, is reliability. Crash-crash-crash-not responding-CRASH! Thank you.

Wow Aubrey!!!  You are just amazing at this!!!  Do you think you could make a flat world?  Just a world that is flat and has no lava or hills.  If you could that would be great because people could easly play a game of tag!!! Thanks.
