Nearly 2,000 game plays a day!
Submitted By admin on 09/07/07
Mars Explorer, admin, Official

I enabled access statistics analysis for Mars Explorer's Amazon S3 powered download server four and a half days ago;
» The results are amazing!

Since then, Mars Explorer has been played around 8,500 times, and the dashboard widget has been downloaded nearly 3,000 times.

Along with this great news, I am also announcing that I will be experimenting with using the BitTorrent protocol to facilitate bandwidth distribution of the Mars Explorer application and widget downloads - as my bandwidth bills are getting just a little larger than I would like :)

At the time of this publishing, there are 38 players online. Just for fun, here's a formula to estimate how many players Mars Explorer receives each day:
Players per Day = (players_online * (hours_in_day * (minutes_in_hour / minutes_of_average_play))

And thus;
38 * (24 * (60 / 25)) = 2188.8 average players per day.

Assuming that Mars Explorer's average "serving size" is 25 minutes, and that the average number of active players is a bit lower than the current 38, our number is very close to reality!

With exposure like this, Mars Explorer can't help but grow.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates!

-Aubrey

It is indeed!

Aubrey:

I think that a few modifications to your equation would boost accuracy:

Players are not online in every time zone, and in the later hours, the number of players progressively goes down. Also, this game is WAY more addicting than you think, there are players who play it for hours at a time! (Including myself lol) Hence, I would bring up average playing time to 45 minutes, and bring down hours in a day to 21.
38 * (21 * (60 / 45)) = 1064 average players per day.

Regardless of whether it is two thousand, or one thousand - I must rely to it with: HOLY GUACAMOLE! :P

If anything that I did had that many uses, I would be elated beyond measure!... Congratulations beyond measure! :P

Welp, I really can't say anything but "Congratulations" And also be exited that the game I play is so popular (that an be a know-it-all about your equation lol), so, I think my comment is done!

I seem to remember seeing some demograghics about Mars Exlorer players about a year ago that included a catagory for what percentage of us were addicts. Am I dreaming or what? This feeble computer I'm on won't allow me to do that search but I will when I get home.

Huh, can't find it now.

Quantcast is in charge of tracking MarsXPLR.com's traffic - 1% "Addicts" comprise 30% of traffic, BTW :)

Sadly, approximately 97% are players who don't have an account. Most of those players are noobs.

...And BitTorrent Mars Explorer downloads are now fully configured!
Please let me know that the new downloads system is working great for you.

For extra credit, please leave your BitTorrent client running after downloading Mars Explorer. This helps to share it with others who are downloading!

Since there are 2188.8 players everyday, does that mean one person tried to cut himself in a 80:20 ratio. Pshhh EMO.

Unfortunately, even at it's current status (which is moderately popular), Wikipedia doesn't classify it as being well-known enough.
