Bugs. Squished.
Submitted By admin on 09/07/10
Mars Explorer, admin, Official

In preparation for 1.9.8, 1.9.78 is the latest stage of a determined effort to rid the Mars Explorer codebase of debilitating bugs. This beta will be updated 'till all (or at least the great majority) of known bugs are resolved, and will then be released as 1.9.8!

Please post all the bugs you encounter in this thread, and they will be summarily annihilated.

-Aubrey

» Play 1.9.78 In Browser

Edit - Vehicle collisions, armament customizations, & more:
09/7/21 - 17:54 GMT
  • Vehicle to vehicle collision physics now simulated as necessary for spectacular impacts
  • Individual vehicle type firepower sliders - (I think that FlyClub first formulated this idea)
  • Brake key now works while composing messages - Futureboy
  • Mouse wheel zooms sniper view - (Think this was MacDane's idea)
  • Laser hit rematerilizations now much more reliable. No more sending players back to the materialization point without gaining Quarry!
Edit - Native Mac App:

» Download Mac App (Beta Version - no fancy package, etc)
(You will need to manually redownload as necessary when new edits appear on this page!)

Edit - Closer To Perfection:
09/7/20 - 19:13 GMT
  • Master List Server performance tuning
  • Tank track collisions now properly calculated (again)
  • RORBs now glow when colliding with other RORBs, even when not in XORB mode
  • Bots now detect what kind of vehicle they are trapped inside, and calculate their control inputs accordingly
  • Faster, smoother materialization clouds - great for laser hits rematerialize games!
  • Server settings a bit more organized

Edit - Fine Tuning:
09/7/19 - 18:08 GMT
  • More random crashes resolved
  • Tank track CG issues fixed
  • Enhanced ride camera:
    • View is "shock absorbed" now regardless of GyRide enablement
    • GyRide camera rotation is now perfectly independent of vehicle - no more slow tracking upsetting your super precision shots
    • GyRide camera is now ALWAYS upright - no more akward sideways aiming
    • When entering ride mode, you will now ALWAYS be facing in the vehicle's forward direction. No more disorienting ride transitions!

Edit - Diagnostics:
09/7/17 - 2:20 GMT
  • Much more info in player dialog - such as new Ping and jitter readouts, and some other networking debugging stuff
  • Couple unusual crash cases fixed - including Kruncher's GUI free game :)
  • Improved new position interpolation - no more (delayed) players, smoother movement!
  • "Tagged the Quarry" messages are back
  • Faster server list refresh after name change
  • Fixed server reconnect feature disconnecting you from any other servers you had joined in the mean time

Edit - Minor tweaks:
09/7/11 - 00:49 GMT
  • Unavailable vehicles now don't materialize by default
  • "Player was evicted" message
  • Smoother laser arcs
  • Slightly smoother background music playback

Edit - New Fixes:
09/7/11 - 16:39 GMT
  • Bot issues should be resolved
  • Game server shouldn't occasionally disconnect itself
  • Networked instances of buggys now properly adjust their wheels to the ground and emit bubbles only when submerged

Bugfixes:
  • Updated networking position interpolation logic:
Much less data is now sent across the network - contributing to significantly greater reliability, and hopefully fewer instances of players not responding.
In addition to the dreaded (Not Responding) messages of yore, the new system will also display (Delayed) next to players who's internet connection isn't keeping up with the data stream fast enough to keep their position interpolated on your client, and (No Connection) next to players who haven't yet sent your client a single position packet - and who are probably suffering from a special class of the "not responding" syndrome.
  • Network physics optimizations:
Physics is now ONLY simulated on YOUR vehicle. This should increase performance and reliability, but it does currently prevent you from imparting kinetic energy to other players when you collide with them. Once the new system is verified as working flawlessly, I will add some logic to simulate the physics of players within ramming distance as necessary.

  • LAN connections through server list work again:
You and a friend both playing over a LAN? Now you can easily use the server list to join each other's games.

  • Fixed tank CG issues!
  • Lightning fast server list loading and updates
  • Joining a game with the same name as an existing player now correctly appends a number to your name
  • Fixed buggy wheel rotation
  • Better buggy handling at low game quality levels - no more wing deployment nosedives!
  • Fixed player "launch" on server entry
  • Game servers now reregister with the list server every three minutes - just in case...
  • "News ticker" buttons at bottom of server list can now be links - as they were originally intended to be...

New Features:
  • Configurable server laser gravity:
Lasers can now curve over hills. Artillery play, anyone?

  • Better looking laser firing when stationary
  • Experimental new GyRide camera option in Game Settings
  • Buggy flight slip now defaults to false in an effort to ease new players in getting aloft
  • Messages now let you know what went wrong when you are ejected from a server - whether it was a host crash, your eviction, or a standard server shutdown
  • Server list now automatically reattempts connection to game server up to 4 times if your first connection attempt isn't successful

Well, amazingly, my mac is actually trying to connect. However, the unity bar loads, and then it just stays on the unity logo, without Mars coming up on the screen.

i haven't played just yet but im glad to see laser 'bend' and Boot messages and im curious as to what this GYride is. I will let you know later, once i play, about anyone remaining bugs.

Edit: When lasers are at slowest, regardless of laser grav, they seem lagish and late to fire, even while traveling to target.

Edit2: I think most bugs are gone, it will take some longer evaluation by more people but so far so good. Laser bend is fun but needs a bit of work..how, i cant say but it just seems off. For instance, i was on volcano trying to shoot in center but it either hit the side closest to me or the far side, no center. Id still like to see some meters for Laser time active and laser width but for now its good. Just imagine a slow moving wall of laser heading towards you :P Just for fun of course. It may encourage sloth in some noobs but...well, i like it. Thank you.

Edit3: boot message doesnt appear in server, it would be nice if it did.

You would like a notification to apper in the server's client (possibly messaging console) when they evict a player - other than the current "player X has disconnected"?

Another bug: I was in babaG's game, and disconnected due to a connectivity problem - I kept trying to rejoin (no success) and only realized the server was not on the list when I refreshed the page.

Aubrey, You may have turned me into a laser man due to your new laser curves and GyRide. It's a challenge i may take you up on :) Only one person in the past really dramatically changed how i played the game and that was Iggy who made me want to ram and not shoot but now that has been changed by you and now more than ever i want to shoot more than ram. Congrats and thank you :)

Same here! And i like it! kinda! When i enter laser cam, i go to the view of one of my bots but since i can control it's movements its it was awesome! When i went to normal views, i went to my own buggy. The bot i was inside was named something like (babaG)'s bot's bot's bot's bot.

Edit: Also, when i closes that server, my name was (babaG)'s bot's bot's bot's bot so i went to change my name but it showed babaG on the insert name screen so i changed nothing, clicked authenticate and it was back to normal. i believe this is part cause of the people entering and being named Aek's bot for instance and having the bot cam view, except when it isnt your server, you cant control bots so its back to the old host cam bug! Interesting!

I suppose it's not the time for requests but since you asked, some of us would really appreciate the return of "is now The Quarry!" in the messaging console to prompt newbees to ask "wut iz qwerry?" Otherwise, we have to start our quarry lectures from scratch which is so much tougher.

I think a super-colossal sign on the server list page AND home site pointing to a tutorial map with a "talking bot" (recorded message) on game play would help the non quarry shooting thing immensely. "Hello and welcome to Mars Explorer. My name is Stinky and I'm a robot version of a vehicle you will see in the game after a few moments. Lemme show you what Quarry means...ZAP! (Stinky lasers the newbee) See how my name tured green?"...etc... Stinky could be like Tom on my space but far less square. :) Stinky could always "be there" for a player like always be visible in every page corner, maybe even in-game with answers to oh, I don't know..... frequently asked questions? Click Stinky's icon to view a list of FAQs? Stinky MUST BE A REALLY FUN HANG or he/she/Tank/Buggy/Hover (cadette's choice) will be ignored.

Also, if the messaging console displayed "was evicted!" then hosts will not constantly be asked if he evicted this or that player.
Thanks, kruncher

dos mas bugs!

1. i dont know if it has to do with the relationship of nat types, but i was in a server with a couple people, and was told there was another server with more people. I left the game to check it out, and only the game i had previously been in was there.

2. I have already stated my last bug, because i thought it was a one time occurence. Every time i make a server and quit out of it, the server will stay on the list on my screen for a couple minutes (i cant rejoin my own server, it says my connection isnt compatible or something). The only way for the server to leave the server list is for me to either join a game, or make a new server (which will just repeat the process of there being a server with no one in it).

i can take a picture of #2 if i encounter it again

personely i think the new laser scope is kind of annoying... like, wen ever i press 1 (to go into laser  mode) it appears in a random place around the buggy... i find that really annoying. but i do like the scope moving a little, its more realistic. but could you plz make it appear at the front like normal=(

On Safari I have seen about three games since this version came out.

On Firefox I have seen about three games as well.

Occasionally someone joins my game but I had a game up on Safari that I couldn't see from Firefox.

I'm in no panic. Just reporting. Both browsers are last version and are set for popup blocking, otherwise they are stock, reset and caches cleared. I'm on wireless "n" Airport with computer firewall but no network firewall.
Screenshot is simultaneous windows, (both manually refreshed) Safari on left and Firefox on right.
Below are simultaeous 1.977 windows -  Safari on left/Mars App on right for comparison...

I will plug an Ethernet cable directly from modem into my kMac tomorrow.

Update - After removing my wi fi and using Eithernet cable directly into my computer I see one game in Firefox and one DIFFERENT game in Safari. I wonder what's going on? The rest of the internet is fully accessable.

Aubrey, Thanks soooo much for fixing wing deployment nosedive and adding "Player evicted!" !
Driving and transitioning from flight to ground/wall-crawling is fun again and hosts have a two fold upgrade.
1. Host won't get constantly asked if they booted player X.

2. Other misbehaving players will see the eviction as a warning.

Please consider returning the announcement: "Player X is now The Quarry!" as a prompt for new players to ask what quarry is. The announcement is often the conversation starter for us to explain.
Thanks, kruncher

So's i was posting on Matthews post about tanks being big bullies and i came up with a great solution, Make tanks have weak spots! Tanks can't feel pain from any other vehicles for the most part, and so, just keep on firing away. But lets say, perhaps, I were to shoot the big guys soft under belly and he'd go  home cryin'? Or maybe kick his fat legs, unbalancing him and sending him home cryin'? (Note: Going home cryin' doesn't mean being sent to spawn pad) I think this is a GREAT solution, plus a little fun too :) Thank you.

Re: Tank Solution - I like your idea babaG and also, as an alternative, I still feel all vehicles should have equal weaponry adjustable in server settings. Imagine straffing a tank in your flying buggy with auto-fire red lasers! Actually, every server with this feature would be a laser mess but maybe fun?

Aubrey, is there any way you could give a rough time estimate of when the Mac application will be up? I understand that there are many bugs that need to be sorted out, but I also notice that many people who own Macs (myself included) are having trouble accessing the in-browser version of the beta.

Hey Zoe. I'll bet you won't get a time frame from Uber-rey.
However, the browser connectivity seems to be improving somewhat.
For the first time ever, Firefox is working better for playing Mars Ex than Safari for me.
Try clearing cache> closing your browser > reopen and go directly to the server list EACH TIME YOU VEIW THE LIST.

I keep a grass skirt handy with some rattles, drums,  several very expensive root potions and a  Sri Baba blessed Goat for my daily combination rain dance/server list prayer sessions.  :)

The goat also eats blackberry bushes. What a PLUS!

i know this is slightly unrelated to this discussion, and its really trivial, but here goes:

i truly believe that the sea monster's name should be changed to something more appropriate for lava, not water. technically, its a sea of lava, but the word "sea" refers to water as we all know it.

i know, uninmportant. sorry =]

btw, babaG i LUV your idea with the tanks!

A suggestion for GyRide: Would it be possible to make the buggy's body appear transparent in GyRide? This would help a bit with shooting/aiming and seeing where you're going. Thank you.

aagghhhhh Aubrey, im havin some trouble with Unity, something just went freaky on 1.9.77!!!!!

I couldnt take a picture, it happened a bit fast:

i loaded up 1.977, because no one as on .78, and i made a game on foxholes. i quit out of the game, and tried to join someones game, and firefox crashed. i clicked the firefox shortcut, and clicked restore previous session,  so it would go back to the game. the game loaded for the most part, but as it got to about 90%, a sign in the middle of the screen said 'Unity data error' and firefox crashed. AGAIN.

help would be very much appreciated at the moment. for the time being, im using explorer.

Uninspired, sometimes when Mars crashes your browser, your shortcut or bookmark can become corrupted.
Try > close Firefox > open Firefox > Firefox preferences > reset Firefox > clear cache > go to Mars without shortcut > make new shortcut > delete old shortcut > load game.

I have had in-game chats become a bookmark and/or show up in my URL window!

You may consider Safari for windows available at Apple

I just removed the Mars Explorer application from my computer and I refuse to play 1.977 again as I have lost quarry in 95% of the games that I have played in that version due to a bug or my Internet provider or my connection speed or rewritten vehicle interpolation  or whatever poltergeist that has been haunting me.

Enough already with losing quarry unfairly already.

It's a beta. When betas are active, most players play in the current official version. In other words, they dont move until they are made too.

I am connecting to 1.9.78 server list reliably now and games stay listed after I exit them!

EDIT - I did say the LIST right?...and not: "connect reliably to games"? Oh I did, good. I just got booted about 12 times from games I would not be booted from. Players were disappearing all over.

I have no Game Settings, Mini Map, Messaging Console, Players list or Server settings view.

Whether hosting or joining and in all maps, I get this. It was triggered a couple of days ago by using the hide button in lower right corner plus hide Mini Map in Game Settings . Yes, I HAVE clicked everything and doing so simply alters the look a bit as shown below. The RC button worked to get me out of default camera. Sorry to my friends whom I could not speak to in-game.

On  1.977, I get all my control panels and Mini Map  after re-installing Unity and the preferences have reset but can't see any games. It's Friday night so I know they're up.

On Beta, I have server list and can join games but get booted a lot and control panels are blank .
The two buttons that do work are RC cam and Exit Multiplayer

So MacDane and I just spent some time PMing each other trying to make a game in 1.91. Neither of us could see the other guy's game. I used Safari then Firefox.  We tried the Alternate Server List with the same result. I gave 1.977     a shot and still get this...(Safari below) If I get a game in Firefox everyone flickers "(Delayed)"

Then this
So, I open my own game and get this. No ping time!

vehicle collisions should be improved. buggies just go under the tank even if you ram from the side. when i was in a tank going 70 mph and i rammed a motionless tank, it only shook a bit and didnt budge. this makes it impossible to play cano king anymore! =(

Physics is now ONLY simulated on YOUR vehicle. Bots do not materialize when hit. The cloud appears but except for a slight jolt from the laser, the bot remains driving around as before.

EDIT: Yes I know that Bots are set to not drive. I just couldn't get a picture while it was zooming around. :-) It still happens when they can drive.

EDIT 2: The spawn point also acts like someone it being rematerialized, but nothing happens there either.

One trivial bug in 1.9.78 - When hosting, IPs are all still duplicates. This is an old bug.

The workaround is to keep clicking the numbers until they misalign in their box. Then, you may have the correct IP address.

Aubrey, I do appreciate your effort to equalize laser power for all vehicles but I feel that the hight Firepower setting takes Mars Explorer in a direction away from the concept of "a strategic extension of one's vehicle" and toward the concept of the other, more violent shooter games.

I actually added the firepower settings to allow players to decrease the firepower of the tank (and all other vehicles) if they desired, but it made sense to me to allow all vehicles to utilize the firepower of the tank - since the mechanism to specify it was already in place.

Poll: Should the tank be the only vehicle capable of level 3 armament, and other vehicles max out @ level 2?

I resectfully vote for equal armement for all vehicles set at Buggy/Hover strength with my second choice being the Firepower slider.

It does "make sense to allow all vehicles to utilize the firepower of the tank" until Mars Explorer's original mission statement of "not about destruction" and "a strategic extention of one's vehicle" is applied.
I'm talking general direction of the game's philosophy as applied to the gaming experience.

Let's emphasise manouver-and-tag rather than park-and-blast? I'd like to think that Mars Explorer is about building cunning and skill more than blasting.

So I guess this version won't have my upgraded maze. *sighs*  I hope the bugs are fixed though completely!

well, there is still a bug that i get frequently. everyone goes none responsive in either my game or their game, everyone gets booted from the game then the box says there was a connection problem, then i cant see them or join their games for like the rest of the day. this, for instance, happened just a few minutes ago when me, rolf, and dray were about to enjoy a game of cano king. oh and also, if you reset a high speeds in ride mode, your buggy breaks;)  please fix!

Oh! I see.
It is only misaligned while you are paused in preparation for the reset, and not once you are back in the game though. Not a big deal ;)

...And 1.9.8 is live!

1.9.8 is identical to the most recent 1.9.78 - with the addition of laser gravity defaulting to on, and the tank's armament defaulting to level 2.

With all do respect, this version is a bit of a winless battle. Bugs will never DIE completely. We've had bugs since the game was made, some have left and others have been born, some more vicious than their parents. You've gotten rid of all the GOOD bugs (such as Volcano jump, river launch, etc.) And you gotten rid of MOST bad bugs that had previously existed but it seems that each version, a new bug is born in it's place. This is just how i see it, sorry if im wrong. Thank you.

I must say... I agree with kruncher on the fact that the game is about how to use each individual vehicles abilities to your advantage. However, i think we also need another solution. As i suggested previously, the tank needs a weak spot. Whether it be under it's body, it's treads, whatever it is, it needs one to equal out the power distribution. In fact, i think with this weakness added to the tank, the tank would be able to fairly keep the sniper lasers. Also, the tank's lasers should be equal in speed to the buggies normal green lasers, or at least closer than they are. As for the hover, i think that if you were to shoot it's engine, it should spin out or at least wobble quite a lot for a second. But, the hover needs some work to be fair as well, like better handling and not spinning out end over end while in mid air. Thank you!
