Here it is!! Version 2.5 is released!

I have smoothed some things out. I reshaped the air intakes. It looks so much better
Hope you like! (you may notice the electromagnetic pads underneath to keep it floating if you crash)

I have added some engine cooling vents and... CUSTOM BLUE JET FLAME!!! If you want a jet flame package, PM me and give me your jet engine to fit it to, flame color, flame length, and so on.

Here's a render that Aubrey sent me!!

Sorry, but the file you posted won't work across the internet... just on your computer. Try uploading it to Google Sketchup Warehouse or whatever that place's name is, then give as the link.

EDIT: Wow that was fast... you could still try google warehouse, I don't think there's a limit on downloads.

Cool, but I think this design's a little too bulky for a jet. If the same design could be turned into some sort of carrier, it would definitely make it into Mars Explorer!

UPDATE::: I want this vehicle to have a thrust that reaches about 100mph and then its physically limited.
We don't want to be flying around with our hair on fire at 400 mph! So its like a buggy, without the glider drawbacks. No power loops, no up and downs, and no stalling. Just lots of power (until 100mph, then You're about done lol). So tell me what you think about the speed limiter, and I thought about an optional boost key like the CRTL key or something. If this is accepted into mars, its gonna be lots of fun! So think about this Aubrey! I really want my very own work in mars explorer.

It looks cool. I like the idea of the retracting wings though. The basic design is what I like, but if you add some looks like yours to the vehicle, it might look nicer.  I wouldn't recommend 6 wheels.

that buggy looks awfully familiar.  As I recall, there is one in the google warehouse, created by the gmail knightrider82transam, with a five star rating so far.  Ring any bells?  lol  Anyway, the jet looks great.  The cockpit is just a bit too long though, try shortening it along the body.

I said in my description that its NOT MINE. I said i got it off 3D warehouse to do size comparisons. I made the wheels farther apart to make it look more like a buggy. So ya, its not mine . I'm not taking credit for it.
Because that would be evil. lol.

my suggestion is...well the only thing i can think of is..... see how the cockpit has a sudden drop in it? try to connect the top part of that with the bottom to improve aerodynamics. other wise, i find nothing else to critique.

Hi GTR34
your jet is pretty nice, but I think it looks more like a cargo lifter than an actual fighter jet.
The pilot would definitely have a hard time trying to tag targets due to the very restricted vision from the cockpit, both due to the placement of vertical stabilizers and the very massive wings and horizontal stabilizers.

Sincerely,

- MacDane

Macdane, I have an idea. Why not have a laser bubble turret on the rear wing? That way you are up above and out of the cockpit. tell me what you think, because i want the jet to be buggy sized and its hard to make it fly if i decrease the wing area a lot. I can try though.

Ahhh, for the record, I would like six WHEELS instead of tank tracks. And I would prefer four wheels to six, but that's just my opinion. As for the design... a little boxy, I hope your new design loses fat like you say it will. It just looks like it wouldn't be able to crack 90 mph. But other than that, I love it! Your idea is quite original (gosh, I sound like one of those big-shot critics), and if your significantly slim it down, it very well could make it to mars! Keep up the good work!

Thanks tigerstorm. I think i'll go with six wheels, because four is too close to a buggy. And it will look goofy.
Yea I put it on a diet and painted it black, with some new styling and better visibility. Hope diet boy gets to mars xD.

I don't mean to be rude, but again, a thrust would encourage noobs to just hold space down and zoom away as soon as they get quarry. It's the same reason a space function couldn't be put on the hovercraft.

Hey Guys,
Tell me what you think about this:

electromagnetic pads keep the jet floating in land mode. So its a hovercraft that turns into a jet.

If you still want the wheels, tell me and I'll redesign the whole underside. (not looking forward to that)

But still, whatever you want people.

MarsJet version 2.2 is coming out, but i need to know if you want the hover or wheels option.
Please let me know!

I think it should have no wheels. And it looks to me like your intention is to make the wings come out only when in the air, well i think it should always be in the air so wings are always out. Plus the no winged version looks really bad :P
Besides all that, not that you make the final decision because Aubrey colors it anyway, it should be in some shade of red or purple to match the existing vehicles. Good job.

I have an idea!!! Tell me if you like this everyone:

I will have the wings fixed, so its gonna be a plane, nothing else.
Instead of having the spacebar as wing retracts, I will have it as the thrust key.
I may put a meter on the thrust power so the noobs dont go flying off with the quarry.
(Like someone else suggested)

And when you get close to ground, the big electromagnetic pads on the bottom of the aircraft will act as landing gear.

What do you guys think? Or should I stay with the rover wheels?

Or maybe should I lose the wings?

Guys, I am pleased to day ver2.2 is ready for action.

I have done the electromagnetic pads on the bottom so it will hover if you crash.
It won't kill you.
I think the speed should be limited to 100 mph.
It wont kill other things.
I also think thrust should be spacebar, and the arrow keys for flight.
It wont kill martians.
Its really kewl looking. (No, its not just cool, its Kewl)
It wont kill itself.

(nvm the kill parts)

So, its lookin pretty good so far.

hmmm. I think i have a great idea!!!!!!!!!
(I think)
if you could make a map that was multiple, small, and spherical planets (think of it as like a level from Super Mario Galaxy! Or a very small solar system) and you could fly from planet to planet!
the jet would be perfect for that!
I'd make it if I was any good at making levels, but I fail at making anything!

I like the design, but why not have it just a jet. I mean, doesn't a buggy do the same thing a rover does? Isn't the buggy our ready-made rover? I like it just as a jet.

I think you should lose the wheels, and plz DO make the tail-fins flow together better. And if you lose the wheels, you can make the jet MUCH slimmer, something I would love. Your idea about the electro-magnetic pads is awesome! If you look at this post Aubrey, plz consider putting this in!!!!! :)

This truly in my opinion is the best "version" yet.  Well done.  There are however a few modifications that i would add/eliminate...

  1. Make the center of the jet (the body) a bit thinner, it isnt quite arrow-dynamic enough.
  2. Don't make the wings in the back so tall, they make it appear to be more of a carrier then a simple fighter jet.
  3. Flatten the body vertically, it seems to tall...(the body)
  4. The windshield is far to big...it looks like about 4 people could pilot it...make it smaller, so as to fit only one pilot (2 at most).
That's all i can think of for now.  This and MacDane's jet are my favorite of the submissions so far...well done and keep it up!

Thanks for reading,
Jay

I must say, i agree with everyone else when i say this is the best jet yet. The compact and playful yet disobediant look of it is very cool. One more suggestion, the tail wings still look slightly off to me, try shortening them, the long parts of them i mean, which would make them closer to the main body. I'd say make e half the size but it's up to you. Great vehicle. I've never been in love with the jet as much as i am now :)

Maybe have the back wings also extend in a bit towards each other, almost as if they were to connect, but give them about a 30% game (30% of the current gap).

i just sat here for 15 minutes reading every single comment on this thread hahahahaha

1. sweet jet, everyone here is envious of your skills

2. retractable wings is a bad idea, it makes the whole jet idea pointless.

jet + retractable wings = the current buggy we all know and love.

3. the biggest factor in making a jet is whether or not its formidable on the ground. to compensate, the jet should take off vertically *(i know this was mentioned in other posts)* like a harrier.

4. a different spawn for jets is probably a good idea.

5. if the jet spawns/ respawns on the ground, there will have to be certain parameters that the jet works within. for example, on the ground, the jet can't reach a speed of more than 25 mph, or cant climb mountains like a tank.

6. if a jet is implemented it will have to have either low or no firepower, or atleast a fixed aiming sight (not necessarily the 1st person view, just fixed turrets).

7. this was already stated in above comments, but speed is one of those factors that has to be looked at considerably. if its too fast, it will be either a cheap way for noobs to runaway with quarry/ it will be hard to steer in close quarters such as eric's maze, and if its too slow it will be the most boring experience in all of mars xplr.

to compensate, there should be 2 keys, one for adding thrust, and one for decreasing thrust. this way, you dont have to hold down the space bar to stay at a constant speed.

8. Also, i dont think any of the designs ive seen have implemented this:
on real jets there are flaps, whether its on the fins or the wings, they are there. those will need to be added for the plane to actually flyable.

that would be the last of my suggestions/criticism =P, your plane is by far the best ive ever seen.

keep working on it, and it should become a marsxplr reality soon enough =]

Actually using thrust vectoring in theory 0 flaps are needed but noonein the real world has tried it with yaw and mars explorer doesn't have yaw but I would pay for the jet to have yaw.

Listen, guys.

I've got everything sorted out.
When you take off, it acts like a hovercraft.
It floats above ground.
Then when you take off it becomes a jet.

Ok, got everything straight now?

I think this jet (like all the other vehicles) should have settings! Ok, yes it WILL have settings, but you get my drift. Yeah, the default setting for agility would probably be so-so, but you could boost it up! I don't think anyone has taken the settings into calculation yet. I mean, you could make it like I do with the buggies (on steroids) or just make it slow(er) and tune it to how you like it. Afterthought: I think about the same as the buggy, with just a little more acceleration, and about 20-25 mph less top speed.

It's a bit stubby as opposed to sleek which makes it a visual match for our beloved, funky, un-sleek buggy.

HOWEVER,
Who would want to fly a jet that's far slower (100 MPH) than The Buggy?  Not me.

For those that think jets must be sleek:

Sorry Richard, Steal is too flat for my taste ;) Its a freaking awesome stealth plane though. even though it may have been made in 2 mins ;) And Macdane, The flame id not going to be in the game, its just a visualization. I'm not going to spend hours on the flame and It won't even be put in the game. The flame in Marsxplr will be a particle flame, like the hovercraft's.

I think it should have a top speed of 200MPH, and yet not as manuverable as the buggy. There is no jet even close to being as manuverable as a buggy in the real world. I also like the electromagnetic pads underneath more than the wheels. I also like the idea of a quick boost used while pressing the space key.

And GTR, you need to not take advise from every single person, because then it will never be finished. Even though many people may have good ideas, and think it should be your final decision. After all, it is your design. And one more thing, its pretty awesome!!

My input on speed and maneuverability:
For speed, it shoud be like the buggy, a max of 200 just with its own acceleration. adding in the effects of gravity, slowing down when going up (unlike the buggy not to the point where it will stall and go back down, but only slightly.) and speed up when going back down towards mars, except it would accelerate faster, sue to the stronger boost, unlike the buggy.
As for maneuverabilty, you can shoose between a fighter jet, which would be a little less that that of the buggy, or a stunt plane, which would be the same or slightly better than that of the buggy. although any more control than the current buggy and it would be almost impossible to steer.) I also think that there should be a boost when the space bar is hit and if possible a way to have BOTH of my mentioned maneuverability types, Example: type M into the chat box to switch from stunt to fighter, or vice versa. It would be just like activating/ deactivating a xorb!.
That's my input, but in the end it's all up to you and aubrey to decide whats what.

Sorry, but DUH!
Buggies don't fly in real life. ;O)

In the air, a jet should be impressive and very maneuverable.
There could be a flight agility and speed slider for this too.

Kind regards,

Awesome jet!

...Though, I have an idea. Why not modify the gravity pads so that they don't work for about 15 seconds? If you hit the ground, get shot, or ram somebody else, perhaps the engines could stall, and you could be crashing and rolling on the ground for about 15 seconds, and THEN the gravity pads kick in, and you're airborne again!

Just because it can turn on a dime (which is virtually impossible!) doesn't mean it can do a roll and turn to change directions. Just sayin'. :D

Beautiful! I can picture this jet in Mars Explorer.

In fact, I can hardly wait to implement this jet!

If you have a chance, I would love to see some landing gear in the form of three "claw like" legs that hinge from the body and allow it to lock the the sloping sides of hills, or pitching deck of an animate Sea Monster.

My current idea for controls is to implement two movement modes: Flight and Landing, toggled by the spacebar. This jet will be capable of VTOL, with the magnetic levitation system allowing it to act almost like a dampened hovercraft in landing mode until the legs contact the terrain. There will be a throttle visible as a HUD on the screen, and also quickly adjustable via the keyboard number keys.

Firepower will probably default to level 1, although this will be determined once we can play with it in the game.

I can't give an implementation timeframe - the Whirld project and rewriting the networking system to work out all it's bugs are my main priorities at the moment - but I really look forward to adding this along with the submarine! I am also thinking of adding MacDane's "Neo Jet" as a smaller, possibly unarmed aircraft - Unless of course I decide to designate it as a spacecraft for special zero gravity "star wars" dogfights inside giant space stations...

Great design, spectacular implementation!

I think it should have no landing gear but instead a 'parking brake' as if you were to hold brake. So maybe it would work anywhere to have a point blank stopping effect, taking a while to get back up to top speed of course. And i think the Mag Lev system should be more like a trampoline at high speeds so you can pull off great saves from hitting the ground and gaining some good speed if done correctly. I dunno... I just dont like the landing gear idea on the jet. It either becomes to much like a buggy, or a hover craft.

GASP!!! Imagine the claws though!!! if they could attach to any surface!
Picture this: youre flying in a jet fight. youre being persued so you go for a brand new escape! you go upside down and put the claws facing up, you then fly through the sea monster and attach to the cieling and hang upside down until they go away. this would work great with a stealth mode. :D
then again i dont know if hanging from the cieling would be a great idea because in that small space. you would have to practice letting go and fliping over really fast so you wouldnt hit the ground.
I for one, vote YES to... the claws! *intense music*

This is truly amazing as many people have said before. I don't really see why not for the claws, it would

make you more stable for sniping.

I don't think a forward positioned laser of the current design would be very practicle when moving at high

speeds, it's hard enough just to hit someone flying in a buggy in 1.9.9, we need rapid fire lasers for the jet

otherwise it will be impossible to hit any body. Think about this your moving along at 150 MPH one way

and another guy is moving along at 200 MPH and is the quarry and is swerving around, now if your able

to actully get you cross hairs on the guy for long enough to shootyou find out that the laser doesn't move

fast enough to hit him before he's moved out of the way, so you have to aim in front of him quit a ways

to hit him but then he's swerving unpredictably so even the best aimer on mars can't hit him. after all

real jets have machine guns that fire up to 2600 shots a minute.

another thing is i don't like the views, there very smooth and they're great aubrey, but they don't look forward when you are turning, i'd rather it not be so smoth but be bhind me.

anyway seeya on mars

spitfire

I agree the lazer sight being forward would be very hard to hit someone. I think it would not be fair if it had free movement everywhere so Why not the happy middle where you would have a diametre (sorry only remember the french spelling) (or 2 times the radius) in which the reticule can move like 15 degrees but when you move anyfarther the reticule turns off and becomes a tool just for looking at blind spots.

no pads what we need are giant grappling hooks that can shoot out in whatever direction you want them to so you can climp up a hill.... in your jet..... wait nvm this is what the buggy needs! or we could make like a spider like vehicle!

I think instead of little to no firepower it should just have the ability to shoot only forward (like a real plane in a dog fight.) that way you would have the same firepower, but it would be much harder to aim.
and it wouldnt really matter what the jets firepower was, because people will most likely change it with the firepower slider in the server settings anyways. :P

actually, id like to change my opinion. magnets would be cool, but maybe the claws would be better.
like if you land and atach to a wall, you could the turn or readjust slightly to position for your next take off rather than using magnets which would logically only have the ability to grab and let go of surfaces.
ASLO, is mars a giant magnet that we could just stick to? ...I had much more to say... but im drawing a blank... Ill be back to this later, when I remember.

Magnetic pads are unrealistic for attaching to dirt...  I guess it might be able to be done with the van der Waals force(the same thing that gecko feet use to attach to things.), but that wouldn't change the pad design.

Yep, Flynn is right. As you can see in picture number 9, there are in fact magnetic pads on the belly of the jet. So, I still don't like the claws, I like the idea of reversing the polarity of the pads so it sucks onto the ground. So, keep commenting please.

I was thinking about this a bit...
A way to add claws without taking away from the design:
Add the claws like landing gear, that automatically come in and out of the jet when you near the ground (like the buggies wheels, when flying) that way when you are flying, you can get good screen shots without the the claws, it would take away from the design, sure, but is it that bad? it would be one thing wrong with a perfect jet model. I say go for the retractable claws.

Re: Gigantic ship posted by GTR before - GTR, you never addressed my idea, did you? - You said the ship may be too big for the map. My idea was to design it as a wrecked, crippled, laser-burnt spacecraft so it would be stationary but mysterious and explorable.

how would you hit anyone with minimum arment? especialy in a jet, i know the idea is that because the jet is so fast it should have minimum arment to compensate so it's not too much better than the other vehicals but it would just make the jet suck because you would never hit anybody! it would be no fun to have dogfights if it was impossible to hit the quarry except by chance, even a bot would not be able to hit you!
why isn't anybody answering me on this?, this is important!

Supermarine,

I think that if this was put into the game that Aubrey would adjust the armament and speed to make it balanced and fun.

I think GTR's original speed projection was 100 MPH. No thanks! Way to slow!

Here's an idea that i've had for awhile: a transforming turret. When you press a button, the magnetic fields in the pads reverses, and you stick to the ground, transforming into a powerful turret. To make up for the power, a xorb-like forcefield has to appear around the turret, making it a large target.

Awesome jet.  I like the idea of it taking off like a harrier jump jet, vertically. 100 mph is still a bit slow, maybe 200 max, but acceleration gets slower the faster u go so it takes a while to get to 200 mph, and noobs can't just fly off very easily. I also think it should have something kind of like a machine gun on it. Plz let it shoot in almost all directions, or it would suck. Seriously. If it can only shoot straight, that even bots could shoot you easily.

I have lost my interest and excitement in this creation, as well as the buggy, because I feel I will never be able to drive them. Oh well, I tried, right?

Color: customizable.
Canopy: SILVER metallic.
Flame: blue (But I would prefer customizable if possible :))
shift key: thrust
arrow keys: control
CRTL key: momentary boost
Jet speed: Customizable (but not too ridiculous)
Agility: Customizable
Space key: Landing gear

Any more you can think of guys?

i think two keys should control thrust. One to accelerate, one to decelerate. That way you dont have to hold the key the entire time. Either way would work i suppose... Actually, command could be a decel/brake key.

I'm pretty sure that the jet has little to no armament, as Aubrey stated earlier. Good luck trying to blast a tank, one of the most armed vehicles in the game, with a jet.

I will send Aubrey a pm about that. Listen, aren't you excited about a new vehicle? Or are you just a bit mad at me because I didn't start on your aircraft carrier? I was loaded with stuff to do today, ok? Geeze... got a test tomorrow, had to finish my book, and attend a meeting with one of my buddies. I can send Aubrey a pm about armaments.

Even still, go play paradise paintball if you want to mindlessly shoot stuff.

This isn't a shoot-em-up game.

I can't wait for version 2.0 of the game!

That's not what I meant; I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be mean, but it's in my nature to be sarcastic. I'm just pointing out some pros and cons of the jet.
But yes, I'm excited. I like flying a lot, and this will add a whole new dimension.

Clear, as in translucent (like the wings on the current buggy)? Sounds pretty cool, if you ask me. Although it would be slightly harder to hit from the ground.

Another point. The introduction of this (work of art) could effectively eclipse the buggy's flight function via sheer superiority. This thing's impact on MEx gameplay could be huge.

I must say, this makes me happy.

I remember first playing mars explorer, in the days when only the buggy existed and foxholes and freestyle were the only modes (or was it just freestyle?)... I loved flying in the buggy but it was always too unstable for me.

Now I use the tank, but I think this is going to be much better, despite the lesser power and armor.

Do you think it'll still be able to cling to the side on rocks or, say, the underbelly of that 'monster (can't remember the exact name at this time)?' I'd really like to be able to snipe people from unexpected places...

It would be awesome if the jet had gas so then you would have to land to refuel then take off right after that. That way it makes the jet more fair to the other vehicles like the buggy. If it cold also drop some type of bomb or explosion that could work like a laser and you could still become quarry.

The Jet already has things to balance it- weak armory and firepower. The bomb thing would be kinda cool, but I think it's lasers would either have to be removed or made so they can only fire in the default line of site (so alt won't work, and you couldn't snipe), otherwise it would become unbalanced once again.

Cool Ideas though, Kudos!

trust me, it's fair.
When you are a good player like dash and kruncher, you can shoot at high speeds and aim the laser so that it will hit your opponent. Others will get the target in their crosshairs, and fire as they fly by, but the lasers will hit maybe 15 feet away from their opponent because the jet would be flying fast. Opponents would be harder to hit in a jet.
