Mars Explorer, admin, Official

Christmas is near - and with it, the official release of Mars Explorer 2.2!

I am still working hard in the final details of this release, but have just attained the stage where I am ready for your bug reports. Please give it a spin, and reply to this thread with anything you find that needs to be resolved. Keep replies simple and on topic, and provide me with as much information as possible to reproduce the bugs you encounter.

» Play Mars Explorer 2.13

This release includes fundamental networking alterations, a completely new Whirld system, tremendous new graphical effects, many performance enhancements, and much, much more.

If you are submitting a new world for this release, please ensure that I receive your final build preferably before, and at least on, the 23rd.

After playing for about 15 Minutes, I found many things that might need to be looked at.

The First, and most annoying bug that I saw, was that there is no option to disable the frame rate advisor, which pops up constantly. May you please re-create the option to disable it please?

The second bug I noticed was that there wasn't much difference between Good, Simple, Fast, and Fastest Rendering Settings. It used to be a 25-30 Fps difference between the three, now it's barely a 10 fps difference. May you please make those settings like they were in past versions?

The third bug I found was with the mini-map,
Once you go below Simple Settings, the mini-map is solid black,
can't see anything except for player positions.

If you would take the time to fix these bugs, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you!

Sincerely - TheDude

yup.  And the problem is most likely the fact that the jump between good and simple is so huge, it doesn't leave much room for more change.  Please fix this!

There is also a bug where, if you add bots, you cannot axe them, no matter what.

Also, if you add bots, the multiple quarry bug comes back, so two or three or more bots could have the quarry.

On the Hovercraft can't float properly on top of the water, even with full hover and height on.

In my server, i noticed stormsurge had no wheels while quickpanic had them. Storm switched vehicles and that fixed the problem. I was trying to replicate the event but messing with lava alt. When i switch the alt to lowest, the screen went blank and then said "...Loading..." like it does when you first start up the version. It's been like that for a while now without changing.

Edit: I've now closed the window and the music is still playing... let's see how long it takes until i go crazy.

Edit: I cleared my Cache and quit Safari, the music is gone. Dunno which helped, quitting or clearing but i did both and it's fine now.

I liked the graphics in 2.12 much better, but I will not be a hypocrite since the FPS seems to be better at the moment.  However, Unity crashes every three minutes or so whenever I play, could you please fix this.

Overall I really liked it, although I noticed that the hovercraft does not float on lava. And, the tanks' camera had a hard time switching between above and below lava, while in the lava river (in "Freestyle"). Again, I really liked it, and the new lava is REALLY cool!!!
I hope this helps,

New version up!

All bot issues should be resolved, hovercraft now hovers on seas, and several possible crashes are now eliminated. Please clear your browser's cache to ensure you are playing the latest 2.13 build.

As I isolate and resolve issues, I will keep » This page « up to date (it is linked directly to an Evernote client on my computer, so updating it is effortless).

Have fun,

Apple Hardware Test is your friend!

My MacBook Pro 3,1 has been running pathetically for the last couple weeks, and I recently used Apple Hardware Test to determine that I have a defective NVIDIA 8600m GT GPU...

If a clean OS reinstall didn't solve your computer issues, you are probably experiencing hardware failure. (bad RAM, GPU, motherboard, or a failing hard drive). Apple Hardware Test may be able to pinpoint the problem for you.

I agree! Thanks to Apple Hardware Test, I was able to convince my parents that, yes, the hard drive is failing, and no, its not becuase of anything I've put on it. Apple Hardware Test also would have saved me a great deal of trouble originally tracking down the problem too. :)

How old? Even my Powerbook from 2004 has Apple Hardware Test. I think you need to hold the "D" key down when starting your computer. If that doesn't work, you should be able to get it off the 1st cd or dvd that came with your computer. Pop it in and hold the "D" key while booting up.

hey aubrey. i dont know if this is considered a glitch or not, but in the past versions, when you go past the lava, you fall off(as we all know).  Now, and in the past version 2.12, the lava just keeps going on and on, but you just can't see it.  In all it's excellent though :). Thanks a lot!

this is more of an idea for a server setting then a bug, but would you be able to make an "every man for him self" mode?

basicly the quarry vanishes and you get points for whoever you shoot!

AKA mega n00b mode XD

but it would only be an option :)

(this would be fun with no minimap or nametags, and low visibility XD)

I have always wanted a mode like that :P

thanks for reading :)

That sounds great.
Here is another idea:
Why not be able to add a ball, and then be able to change its size and stuff, it could be next to where you add bots under server settings.
It could be sort of like a XORB without a vehicle on the inside.

Hmmm, Since 2.1, In Safari version 4.04 in 32 and 64 bit mode, I have;
* No brake
* No crosshairs
* No sniper laser
I trashed Unity and re-downloaded it and used the disc image installer with same results. Others with Safari seem not to have this problem but I don't know their Safari version. Also, after trashing Unity, clicking on Launch Game didn't automatically download Unity or prompt for a download. I had to google for the Unity download page. I am the admin of this computer.
I can play just fine in Firefox so no big deal.  '08 iMac OS X 10.6.2

Unity Island is beyond what I ever thought possible for clarity and beauty!
Thanks Aubrey!

Alright.  So far no bugs.  Really.

Also Unity Island is amazing.  And you can get a almost night time version with 0 visibility.  Very beautifull water and lava.  I must say it again very beautifull water and lava.  I LOVE it where I can see my reflection in the water!  It is amazing.  Now the water can be updated a tiny bit more with splashes but that's it.  the water is near perfection.

Another bug has been found by yours truly.

When you drop FPS settings below Simple,
Lava/Water turns black, solid black at the top, and from looking below towards the sky.

However, once underneath, everything is clear, yet I can't see above the top of the lava/water.

Also, no matter what FPS setting I have, the lava/water on the mini-map appears black.

More bugs have been located.

In all FPS Settings, no matter what FPS cap I have set,
the Mini-map is black, just solid black.

Another bug, in any FPS setting, parts of the terrain are black.
I have found no fix for this with the FPS cap.

Now, for the major Bug.

Performance of all vehicles drops off from Beautiful, when the vehicles are at it's best,
To fastest, when they are at it's worst.

Between Beautiful and Fastest, performance of all vehicles drops gradually, but noticeable.

That is simply not fair for the players who can not get above simple, fast, fastest, etc.

Please fix these bugs if you may, Thank you and happy holidays.

The terrain blackening is based on this issue, and I have enabled a short term workaround that should solve it for now.

Your report on vehicle performance is very interesting!
Unless there is a bug in my code, the performance of all vehicles should not be affected at all by the game quality level. The collisions of vehicles with world objects should be a bit more accurate (less prone to allow the player to punch through thin objects at super high speeds) at the beautiful and fantastic quality levels.

Have you observed a performance differential between different quality levels only in the buggy, or in all vehicles? What specific aspects of the buggy's performance have you noticed to decrease with the quality level (flight speed, acceleration, cornering, etc).

I have only noted a performance decrease in the buggy as of now.
The sole reason being is I have not tried any other vehicles yet.

The specific aspects in the buggy are mainly flight speed, acceleration, cornering while in flight, and agility.

As stated, it is not much, but it's just enough to where it is noticeable.

My Error Odyssey:

I was playing a game with GTR a few minutes ago in one of his custom worlds, and he decided to add max bots. I lagged a little, but then, all of a sudden, my game lagged so low that I only had one frame every 10 seconds. I described what happened to GTR, and he took away the bots, but my game was still monumentally slow. I managed to exit out of the game, and tried rejoining. After GTR let me in, I was only in the server for about 30 seconds, and the game kicked me out, telling me that I lost connection. I tried rejoining several times, but the connection was too poor to let me in. When the connection finally got strong enough, GTR must have been AFK, so after a few minutes of waiting at the password screen, I went back to the server list. When I tried coming back to the games, I got somehow transferred to the server-starting screen.

Bug: The lava is invisible on simple, fast, and fastest.  Oddly, when you are under it, it is normal, but when you are above it, you cannot tell.  You can tell that there is lava, but it is impossible to tell where it starts. The ground looks foggy under invisible lava, but there is not ANY noticeable difference in the air.
