The Pinnacle of Mars Explorer
Submitted By admin on 10/01/18
Mars Explorer, admin, Official

Greetings everyone!

As Syn3h draws nearer to reality, I am fine tuning the last versions of Mars Explorer.

2.22 includes the most rock solid networking ever (which is far from perfect due to fundamental flaws in Unity which they have now acknowledged), many bugfixes and refinements, better buggy and hovercraft handling, an installer for the native windows app, and much more.

If you are experiencing any issues with the browser or dashboard versions of Mars Explorer, please try downloading a native Mac or Windows app. There are some known issues with Unity's webplayer that I am working with them on at the moment.

My next milestone will be the release of the Whirld 3 library - which will revolutionize world design. After that, a complete rewrite of the networking system is in order - which is a project of such magnitude that I want to ensure that we have Mars Explorer finely tuned in it's corrent state before embarking on this new venture.

Enjoy,

-Aubrey

Great version Aubrey! Particularly with the networking enhancements!

I find it fitting that Marsxplr retires the way it is,
that is by releasing stable versions and continuing to enhance it, even in it's final hours.

Great work Aubrey, great work!

Very nice. By far the best we have ever had, despite the few bugs we still have. Such a vast improvement from the 1.9 era.

I see quite a bit of work in your future with this networking, Aubrey... Good luck.

Great version! I don;t see anything wrong with the networking, and booting is fully possible in non-dedicated mode now!

Buggy physics are far more reliable, but... Could we possibly have an option in the server settings that turns OFF whatever you changed?

I miss being able to drive between the floors of the sky monster. :(

What ever happened to taking a vote? On the site that YOU created Aubrey to give a fair chance to all ideas, may I remind eveyone that Mars Explorer still holds the highest vote by a ridiculous amount. Furthermore, (this more of me being a stubborn person) I will forever only play Mars Explorer, as syn3h will always be a mask hiding a true identity of perfection. The game will always be Mars Explorer because a name is something's essence, something that has never changed since the creation of this game.

Hey Aubrey, few MAJOR problems.  One: Every single person who joins my game has a No Connection.  Two: On the cano king world, I started randomly spazzing really, REALLY bad when I tried to reset, and there was no way to stop it.  When I tried to reset, I fell through the floor and then respawned, which set off another bout of spazzing.

Aubrey,

There is a game issue, particularly with player servers.

Most of the time, perhaps 90 Percent, when I join a server, it does not last long.
No matter how good the computer is, how much RAM it has, or how fast it is or how good the connection and router are, the server ultimately fails within 5-10 minutes of starting.

For most of the day, the same thing has been happening from server to server.

I am using the web browser version of Marsxplr 2.2, using a 2008 Microsoft Hp Desktop computer with Windows Vista as the Operating System. I have 546 Gigs left in my hard drive out of a possible 687 Gigs.

Update:

Reports from other players suggest that the Application is doing nothing to prevent this, it is not preventing server failures for either server host or server guest.

Another Update:

Aubrey, as Kruncher stated yesterday when asked what happened to the server by Applesky, Kruncher simply said "Vehicle change killed it" and "Vehicle change isn't healthy for a server". I believe he's on to something Aubrey.

Dude: When you speak of server failure, are you saying that the host's game is crashing?
If so, please try hosting a game on a dedicated server using the appropriate checkbox in the settings panel of the lobby window. I have defaulted the utilization of dedicated servers to off because they can't handle everyone using them at the same time - but if there are only a couple dedicated games running, they should be pretty solid.

Baba: Is it still down for you? I really don't know what to say... I am hosting the webplayer datafiles directly on Amazon S3, which is an enterprise grade file delivery system.

You're welcome for the native app Kruncher! Enjoy :)

Sorry Flynn. If you really miss wall penetration, I think you'll ned to start designing secret holes in the walls of your worlds :) I am now running an extra simulation on top of the physics engine that detects when objects move through each other between physics frames, and then ensures that their collisions are properly calculated.

Server failure happens in three stages, first Non-connection will flicker on and off, the server host will change some networking stuff, and solve that issue for at least 2 minutes.
Then it's full blown non-connection, which lasts for a long time before the server finally crashes.

Common symptons of a server beginning to crash is when players reconnect and rejoin because their text box was not transmitting properly to the rest of us, they were typing and entering words into it, but the other players could not see their words.

I just attempted to run a game on a Dedicated server in 2.22, and it was automatically ended by the system itself, saying my connection had timed out. I have provided a screen shot of the occurrence, which happened to me two times in a row, below.

Aubrey,

There is a rather old bug (See above) floating around 2.22, and it's wreaking havoc with players servers.

I'm not sure what causes it, why it happens, or anything to help you figure this one out at all, so I apologize for that in advance.

Several players including myself have had their text boxes fail on them.
They can still see their text, but nobody else can.
Or it could be the opposite way, we can see their text, but they can't see ours.

I have no idea what is associated with this bug, other than that player server crashes are not usually far away when that happens.

Aubrey,

This is more of a suggestion than a bug.

I was just in a game, where the quarry had flown way outside the world,
by the time somebody got him, I couldn't not see land at all, and had been flying for almost 30 minutes trying to get them.

Here is a snip taken after 10 minutes of flying.

Perhaps make it where after you go so far outside of the world, not directly at the lava edge, but a ways past that.
Where once you go so far, you automatically respawn.

Just an idea.

No Rolf, there doesn't need to be a settings option.
This needs to be clear and cut, with no options at all.

You can still do tricks in the jet, just wouldn't be able to go out of a certain boundary, which should be determined by Aubrey, and Aubrey only ok?

Players have been consistently complaining that I have no wings when flying.
This has been consistent for two weeks now, so I believe this to be either a Pc or Unity bug.
The problem has been consistently fixed by closing and opening your wings and then keeping them open.

Also, I ran into a double quarry issue tonight, which I believe to be a pc to unity bug, as nobody but me noticed or saw it. I have provided you a screen shot of the occurrence.

syh3n (I don't care to spell it right at this point in its creation, and I am also against that name) should still have links from its site to mars xplr.  I don't think the new game should overwrite mars explorer, it should be similar but seperate so you can still leave mars explorer for us.  Also, it would be nice to have hidden Mars Explorer based easter eggs or worlds as a sort of inside joke.

WofLink,

Syn3th is Marsxplr, just under a new name.
All of the worlds we know and love, such as Freestyle and Foxholes,
will all be in Syn3th.

It will not be separate, it is merely a name change.
Whether or not we agree with it, Syn3th will happen.

Hey! Another glitch.  In the picture, I appear to be moving slowly, upside down far from the level.  However, that was actually an invisible floor that I hit while doing 700 + in a jet.  The invisi-floor, when viewed through first-person, was made of lava.  ???Invisible Floor In Action

I have recently tried out the new version of Mars Xplr, and was greatly annoyed by advertisements popping up in the list of servers.  I understand the need to make money off this, and don't care much about the advertisements on the site, but in game advertisements I think is going too far.  I will still play mars explorer either way, I am just saying that this new level of advertising is really annoying.

Aubrey, for the past month, a new trend has popped up in Mars.

"Take the jet, blast the quarry, then take off into the sunset where nobody can get me!!!!muhahahaha!!!"

I'm personally tired of that, as almost every time I join a game now, it's ruined because somebody in the jet has gotten quarry and just taken off hundreds of thousands or even millions of feet away from everybody.
Thats not cool.

Heres my suggestions.

Option One: Create a boundry at the edge of the Lava or just a little outside of it to keep everybody in check.
Option Two: Deprive the jet of any firepower, I personally don't think it should be allowed to have lasers, at all.
Option Three (My personal favorite): Get rid of the jet on Mars completely, as i consider it a failure and a nuisance to any game on Marsxplr.

My thoughts and suggestions.
Thank you.

Sincerely,

TheDude

I agree, and disagree...

Option one, MY favorite, has been done, but the limit is so high, it is virtually useless. I think that the al limit for the jet should be adjustable in the server settings, along with the default jet restriction alt being severely lowered.

Option two is a little rash, I think it is just better to make the default fire power not include laser lock.

Option three - bye bye rocket racing. :" (

By the way, wasn't the tank a nuisance? I find it perfectly easy to pawn a jet noob, if I have some big rorbs attached. :)

What if a jet goes past a certain alt/distance limit, it's engines would shut down, and it's speed would drop to 0?  That way, it stops jet-noobs by dropping them into the respawn alt, but will let buggies still fly around.  Good idea?  No?

Really?  Hrm.  Never knew that.  I'm off to test it!  Or did you mean when you go to negative alt?  Cause I meant having a setting that makes it so if you go to a certain POSITVE alt, then you would either have all engines shut down, or you would respawn.

Re: Jet Changes

I disagree with all of those options personally. The jet can already be deprived of fire power and can even be removed from a server by checking off the bubbles that activate and deactivate those things. If you don't like the settings of a server you are in, then you should make your own server with settings you do like.

I am also against the alt boundary. It takes away from the freedom of flying. Maybe it isn't necessary to fly 30k alt in the air but it's still nice to have that freedom. You have the freedom to chose your own settings and i think that's enough.

BabaG,

Suggesting people go create their own servers if they don't like something or the quarry is out of reach is the reason why there are so many one man servers.

Some players don't know about server settings Baba, some people want to play the game with others.
We can't simply solve every problem with "Server options" or "go to your own server", we just can't.

There should be some limit on the jet, something to make the game more fair for those who don't know anything about the game.
I say the jet deserves no firepower, and that there should be boundaries on the outside of the world and quite a ways up as well.

I agree with babaG in this case. We CAN go to our own servers, especially considering that so many people complain about noobs anyhow.

We all look for a familiar game to join, if you started your own server and waited, you seriously would get a population within half an hour.

As for the jet, I think that a limit should be default, but able to be turned off in one's server. Firepower CAN be turned off in a server, and I do it all the time, however nothing is like a jet laser battle.

Well, i don't see anything wrong with that. If people would rather be alone with their own settings, let them. If they want to compromise and join other peoples games, they can do that too. You can't suit everyones needs, so really, by taking something away entirely, you'd still be clashing with many people. I think server settings are better because you can do as you please if you wish to.

I do see a problem with that though.
Marsxplr is a multi-player game, and default settings, and the game in general should be fair to everybody.

I'm tired of hearing "Go to your own server" or "Server options" from forum members who know there is a problem, it's sickening now.

When there is a problem, you solve it entirely, don't give a stop-gap solution,
don't make the server settings more complicated, just fix it!

Im sorry Dude, but that is my opinion. I feel that it is a better alternative than getting rid of settings and limiting players. I would like the freedom to be in control of what i want in my own sever and i understand that i cannot be in control outside of my own server. I think that's fair, but that's only what i think.

TheDude: You said the jet should have "No fire power and that we should make a boundary on how far you can fly." If the jet didn't have fire power and you had limited boundaries to fly around in then what would be the point of the jet? Wasn't the jet made to go fast and go far places? Please answer that question Dude.

Regarding the suggestion to "Open your own server" to avoid the recent and popular jet-hit-and-run syndrome:

It is reasonable to suggest that, to have a game customized to your liking, you open your own but.....

Is it reasonable to suggest that to get a balanced, fair game, one must stop joining public default servers, open a server of their own and change the DEFAULT settings?

I am not talking about MY gaming experience as much as I am talking about the general public's ability to join publicly listed, default settings games with an expectation that the game will be set up fairly for all vehicles.

Ok, weirdest bug ever in my life. Interesting story to follow:

Hello, I am AppleSky, and I'm a victim of sudden server takeover. I was hosting a server at Dvo's Futura, and had been having one of our famous yet new "App v. Everyone/Army" version of 'Cano King. Suddenly, this message appeared:

This message appeared for everyone.

Also, a player named "(MarsBars)+" appeared, without a "So-and-so has joined" message.

The name of the server changed to "(MarsBars)+'s Game" and the password on the server disappeared. I still could change the settings however, and changed the name and password back. Several people randomly dropped out and rejoined, although they were able to function properly still before rejoining. When they rejoined, they found themselves in "Mr_Mars's Pinball", rather than the Dvo's Futura where I still was.
Several times while the server remained up, this message appeared:

Not sure what has happened, but MarsBars made it in while the server was still passworded, right as the server was taken over. The server did not act like it was dedicated, not did it have the ">>" in the list. Other than players occassionlly complaining of NR players (Connection was set to RPC [or whatever that furthest one in the list is]), nothing was wrong with the server before this point.
