Networking Refinements!
Submitted By admin on 10/01/01
Mars Explorer, admin, Official

Greetings all!

Due in large part to the pathetic performance of the dedicated servers after the extra load from the Christmas release, I have just completed deploying a new dedicated server architecture that is running on Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud.

Player lag should be much lower, and the change has also enabled me to enable some new networking features that should provide smoother player movement as well.

Mars Explorer 2.21 includes nothing but networking refinements, and will be released as soon as it is perfected. This first release may very well include some flaws - your reports will help me to isolate and eliminate them.

Have fun!

-Aubrey

Awesome!  But I have a few, non-networking bugs.
1. I can drive through some ground, as shown in the pic.
2. As I drive, a laser shot hovers in front of me, but a short distance away.
Aside from these, this version is 100% AWESOME!!! Thanks!

The laser that you see might just be the aiming laser.  Think of it as a targeting laser on a sniper rifle; it helps you aim at your target.  I don't know if you can turn it off.

Hi Aubrey,
This version has freed me from terminal fog so thank you for that!
Unfortunately, in Firefox with the Good setting, I'm getting 90 FPS and still having screen freezes and jumpy looking view. Same jumpy view in Simple, just higher FPS. I have not changed any computer screen settings. Safari looks much smoother but I am still missing the stuff you reported to Unity.

Hello Aubrey,

So far so good server wise, no failures as of yet.

As for the lag problems, they still persist for myself, no matter what fps I seem to be in.
They are not as severe as they once were, but they are still there.

(Edit)

I must make myself clearer on the Lag Issue,
It is a browser to browser differential.

Internet Explorer is the worst when it comes to Lag.
Google Chrome is the least worst lag-wise,
and Opera is somewhere in the middle.

I hope that cleared up some stuff!

NO BUGS (that haven't been mentioned)
Anyway, I have a suggestion regarding the newest worlds.  I think that either the welcome message should have who made it, or the world selection should have it, not a mix, It just appears inconsistent to me, I would rather have it all the same.

Good point!

I will be including a message on all new worlds, and I may get around to including one in all the current worlds as well.

If your world's name is short, you also get your name in it's title - if not, you don't. :)

Aubrey,

I give up on Dedicated servers, non-dedicated servers are more reliable in the long run.
After some time (30 minutes to 90 minutes), dedicated servers fall flat.
Weird bugs spring up everywhere, most notably the non-connection bug.

Also, in Dogfighter's Dream World, the Spawn point is too high off of the ground for tanks,
you have to fly up to get to it, it's not exactly on the ground at all.

Thank you.

One thing that sometimes works is to reset and use airbrakes (I dunno if there are any on tanks). If you wait a while then the switch choices pop up. Like I said, I know for sure that this works on buggy, but I'm not sure for tank.

The dedicated servers are acting up again... either I was NC or TheDude and Applesky were. There was one instance where Kruncher and TheDude froze, but they were still responding... that has only happened to once before.

Aubrey,
Thank you for the update, so far I can see no new problems with the it.  However the new map, Sky Bridge, looked wrong somehow.  I examined it closer and I think the ground is too high, the bridge and most of the canon are underneath it.  I flew over the edge to see and I think the ground is 35 to 85 ALT higher than it is meant to be.  I hope that helps.

Hey, hey, hey!  Two new levels!  Thanks a ton for adding to the developed levels.  However, on the level Levatshia (sorry if I spelled it wrong) I found this.  Still, this level is awesome for a CTF-like battle.  Thank you again.

Also at Levatshia, I was not able to drive on the areas with the boxes and the stairs going up to them. The buggy landed on them, but the wheels didn't interact with the floor.

Aubrey, please, PLEASE leave arcade mode un-smart!

Your new additions to the mode is causing my camera to jitter, display my buggy off center, cause bad angles, confuse me as to where I am, and some times not even show my buggy at all.

IF you are not goign to leave arcade mode stupid, make a FOURTH mode, and call it stupid!

For crying out loud, I need my camera to be the way it was in the beginning.

From flyclub's description, he may be stuck in Smooth which brings the cam angle around to a front or side view sometimes. I have had a few non responsive GUI inputs with the last 2 versions. Arcade is normally as vanilla as cams get. Agile is a SmartCam and that's not what he wants.

Arcade Camera's are in no way smart.

I have experienced the same things you are experiencing, and have dealt with it,
Or I have left the game and come back to a better Camera.

It is a bug, and I'm sure Aubrey is working on it.

Now just wait right there,
I try to help you out, and that is the response I get in return?

"Just leave me, and my comments alone, and go away."

That's what I get for trying to help you?
In all my years, I have never gotten that for merely trying to help somebody.

That one statement by you has driven me past my breaking point.

What's with you? Really flyclub, what is with you?
Can you not stand being in a community where people have different opinions than you?
Can you not tolerate the fact, you're not in charge?
Can you not stand that people have varying degrees of understanding and thinking,
and that they're thinking may not be the same as yours?

I've had it with you flyclub, for over a year I and several others, have put up with your self-centered, arrogant, egotistical, OCD, bi-polar like attitude.

Over a year.

I and several others have taken verbal abuse from you,
constantly calling everybody "idiots" for no real reason.

Banning myself, and many others on sight for no reason other than the fact that you don't like us.
Asking fellow players to ban me, and several others on sight every time we enter a server with you.

You complain to us all for cussing on game,
then proceed to cuss at others in the very same server.

You preach to us all that we need to up our tolerance level and maturity,
Then you turn around, and evict a player over one thing, without explaining.

Get real flyclub, Do as you say not as you tell.

Why can't we say something about your character when you ride us all about our actions all the time, and call some of us horrible people for nothing but saying something about you.

Why can't we take your ideas, when you take others own ideas all the time?

flyclub, it is because you are a hypocrite, and many of us are tired of it.
I don't want to hear your customary "I don't care you idiot".

Also, you are not a moderator flyclub, nobody elected you, or asked you.
So do not go around telling new players that your a moderator.

oh yea, I hate to break it to you, but I, nor others, are going away anytime soon.

Have a pleasant night.

Sincerely ~ The Dude

Dear Aubrey, I'd very much love you to read this idea...

This is not my own idea and i can't remember who suggested it but i owe the credit to them.

We need Achievements in the game. This is the best idea i've heard in a long time... The game as it is has little organization and it very free. This isn't bad at all, but it leaves little incentive to stay with the game. Achievements would entice people to explore, play the game, learn to do better to get more achievements and so on. I figure this is almost entirely a positive addition to the game. Of course, there would be the bragging that comes along with it but i don't think it would be too much trouble. Basically, im envisioning something pretty much exactly like the Xbox Gamerscore type of system. Players complete objectives that are given on a list and are rewarded with points. Hard objectives can be anywhere from 30 to 100 points where as easy ones may be 5 to 10. There wouldn't be any ranks, but i think the cumulative points gathered by a player should be shown on the players profile. Please tell me what you think. Thank you.

Edit: Of course these objectives are not in anyway mandatory but can be completed whenever the player feels like, thus keeping freedom in the game, but adding some goals to keep interest.

HELLO EVERYONE!!! So today I was sitting here bored on my computer, and was like "I haven't played mars xplr in a long time!" so I load it up. "Oh my, and update!" download.
Then I play it. The new maps, and the jet. OH MY GOD! These new maps are amazing! and the jet is all I had expected. I will definately be playing a LOT more. Maybe even more than I used to play, which was a lot.
It's good to see a bunch of old aces, as well as some new ones.
Anyways, take care friends, and keep an eye out for me!
May you explorations be long, and fruitful, Keasbey.
P.S. I played for ten minutes in GTRs iceland and didnt find the bunker until the last 30 seconds. very nicelsy done, my friend, as always.
P.P.S. Baba!!! It was my idea, at one point! You forgot about me, eh!? ;)

Aubrey,

The dedicated servers are down again, and are unaccessible.
Here is my proof that they are indeed down.

No dedicated servers available.

Also, another bug is that the boot/ban feature does not work on anything but dedicated servers. The feature is broken on non-dedicated servers.

I no longer have an issue with the camera's as some folks stated,
I believe that to be a computer/browser issue, which only requires the clearing of the cache and cookies to fix.

Thank you!

Aubrey,

Since Friday morning for myself, the entire server list has collapsed.
Every single version, no server list.

This is the third-fourth time this year that the server list has crashed.
Please find the cause of what is making crash constantly, or find another server host Aubrey.

Sincerely ~ TheDude

{Update}

This now looks more and more like an issue with Unity,
as Paradise Paintball's master server is also down.
Aubrey, I now honestly believe, that for Marsxplr to reach it's full potential,
that Unity3D must be dumped for another game engine.

Heh - I am seriously considering it...

I am currently troubleshooting an issue that causes dedicated servers to "spike" and bog down the server they are hosted on (taking the master server down as well) whenever I least expect it :)
Once this is resolved the reliability of everything shoud be pretty good.

Oh - and I also implemented some huge improvements in Levitashia yesterday! A minor new Mars Explorer version will soon be released that is fine tuned to utilize some new graphical effects in the latest Levitashia, but even now it should be pretty fun to explore.

Regarding said "spike", I have observed time and again players in a working server all turning

Edit - Unity Plug-In 2.1 makes 32 bit Safari work perfectly for Mars Explorer.
Thank you applesky!

Edit - Every time I start Safari and play Mars Explorer, Unity "upgrades" my plugin automatically and kluges my crosshairs, brake and sniper laser. I mean, what the....
I will keep the zip file handy with old Unity plugin.

It would be a shame to lose the Unity from this game,  would it be overall, or just the master server?
Also, most likely due to sheer demand, I cannot connect to dedicated servers once again.  I am starting to think that the dedicated servers are not worth the trouble.
EDIT: I might be able to still connect to dedicated servers, but games stay up so long after they are taken down that I try to join games that do not exist.

Okay, here is my report Aubrey. Since I have some unique gaming problems that no one else seems to have, I seriously can hardly tell if my system is bugged or the game is at this point so I'll simply relay my in-game experience.
* Lasers often strike and make a splash on target vehicle and/or disturb trajectory of target vehicle without registering.
* Lasers often repeatedly travel directly through target vehicle with no effect, even at point blank range.
* Attacking vehicle becomes Quarry green before their laser hits my vehicle.
* Vehicles lurching and stopping in both dedicated and non dedicated servers.
* Boot doesn't work in dedicated or non dedicated servers.
* Jet still auto fires even with Auto targeting off and no other vehicle in the server.
* I get the effect of lag despite constant warnings that my frame rate is too high. (often 100 FPS so I cap at 35)
* I must trash the latest, automatically updated Unity plugin and reinstall 2.1.0f5 every time I launch Safari or do without crosshairs, brake and sniper laser.
* Some games still have double Quarry or no Quarry.
* WIngless buggy flight is common.
* I still randomly pop out of games but can rejoin.
* Here is a brand new one - When in close proximity, target vehicle will go (Not Responding) for just a flash then return to normal when distance is increased. This happened consistently for two hours tonight.
Thanks for reading.

Aubrey,

The bugs tonight have been horendous.

Most notably, the chat box is failing, flickering on and off in it's usability.
Many players have stated that it fails them, and they can not see what others are typing after 5 minutes of play.

Plus all the items Kruncher stated above were seen as well.

Also, when a player resets, they go unresponsive.

Dedicated servers are down again,
and the boot button does not work on non-dedicated servers still.

Thank you.

Applesky, from what I can tell, there is no shine because the reflective shader's quality was upped quite a bit, making it more sensitive to the light level. Likewise, due to the actually rather dark lighting on the Sky King level, your buggy does not shine.

The other reason may be that the shader colors are more well blended, causing it to become a blend of the three colors seen in the reflection.

Well, Its not the lighting in the Sky King, 'cause there's no shininess to the body anywhere, though it does get more well illuminated in other stages.

EDIT: The tank seems to be working like I think it should, none of the other vehicles have the shininess past simple though.

AppleSky:

At the "Good" quality and above, all materials switch to "pixel" mode which is much more expensive to compute than vertex mode and which also looks much cooler.

In pixel mode, the specular highlights are cast across surfaces more accuratley - which makes the vehicle's lighting look a bit different.

I have an 8600M GPU as well, and my vehicles don't look nearly that drab on the Good quality level. Are your vehicles loosing all their highlights, or just not quite as shiny from certain angles? Does your buggy look like that on all worlds, or only the Sky King?

Well, I though I had it traced down to a Firefox issue, but it works fine under both Firefox and Safari on my iMac with a ATI Hadeon HD 2600 Pro. My Sony laptop that has the problem has under both Firefox and Chrome, and I didn't test any others. Below are some pictures from the same server on both the iMac and the laptop with the 9600M GPU. Both are on Good Quality. (Pictures taken in v2.22)

Laptop:

iMac:

Q & A:

Q: Are your vehicles loosing all their highlights, or just not quite as shiny from certain angles?
A: Yes, they appear to be losing all highlights, except for the tank is shiny in settings simple and up.

Q: Does your buggy look like that on all worlds, or only the Sky King?
A: Yes, it happens in all worlds, both block and non-block.

Hope this helps!

What's your point? 2.22 was intended to be the last version of Mars Explorer. Aka, No more updates. 2.22 = The End. I don't know how many times I can repeat myself to everyone who whines about there being nothing new. 2.22 is all there will be until Syn3h. Syn3h was waiting on Unity 3 for quite some time. Aubrey has stated that a Syn3h beta release would be available "within a month".

"I don't have any hard dates to offer for Syn3h, but I honestly expect to see a beta release for some version of it within a month." -July 19th, 2010

Now, if only we could all quit whining about Mars not being updated because Syn3h is about to become available for testing. . . . *Glares at random whiners*
