Hey Martians,
I just downloaded Sketchup, and, once I figured it out, I'm loving it!! Here's a picture of my first project:
My ship so far...
yes, the body looks like a canteen bottle. xD It needs some body work, engines, knitpicking, smoothing, and some sort of cab, but what do you think for a first try? Don't worry, Seb, I'm not much of a threat to your glory :P Also, the beast is almost 850 feet wingspan, is that way too big to use as a map, or can it be scaled? And, can I have a summary of how to turn it into a map when I'm happy with it? Thanks ;)
~Alex

And, btw, is there a way to easily round off the joint between two 3D shapes? Like this: Thanks ;) I don't check my stuff on here too often, so I'll reply when I can.

It's looking pretty good to me. But of course, everything looks "pretty good" to me around here. ;)

Well.... The cockpit-to-body/wings ratio seems a tad off to me. Maybe try making the cockpit and the connecting tunnel-thing a bit larger to even it out.

Here's the current pic:
Found the engines and afterburn in the warehouse, will probably not keep them because of possible "credit" concerns. No interior stuff yet, still working on perfecting the outside ;)

if you get stuck, or need any help just feel free to ask me

hey,
I'm thinking of scrapping this one anyway, and starting all over with meters and a nice new shape :D also, I'm working on making one for a map of it's own, not really for bagel's garage or anything. I'm definitely loving such a great program for free! :D

It seems you are using approved methods here.

As for the canteen bottle look, you can work around that by adding a few features to the hull:

  • Cut holes in it to break the surface and fill some of the gaps with translucent material.
  • You could also divide parts of the hull into two or more sections by cutting it up lengthwise.
  • Add objects to the surface (Using arrays of components and then scaling them individually is fast)
  • Add connected components to the surface to mask the shape. (Like cooling ribs etc.)
  • Changing some of the surfaces in the final phase of the design can also be worth while.
- By changing surfaces I mean by adding shapes to them and extruding that shape either deeper into the surface or the opposite direction.

Sigh...

Everyone thinks they're just so great when they can make a ship from 'danes tutorials.

I never took those tutorials.

Neither did I, but then again, I am not the best ship maker.

There is a thing I like, it's called creativity, I am happy to see that there is a lot of it in my spaceships post.

The newer model of this ship is better, although it looks slightly like the Valtrax.

Then again, alot of the ships people make look like something straight from macdane.

I could make those in about 20 seconds.

Inspiration is dying, and we need some more creativity.

Well, I am only teaching very basic methods here.
Just enough to get people started.
Where they go from there is up to them selves.

Hi Alexander,
For a first timer, I think it's quite fine.
I am sure that you will have tons of fun using Sketchup and that you will develop your models along the way as you learn new methods and get new ideas.

easy, just round off the corners of a rectangle with the arc tool, then use the offset tool to turn it into strip of it, then push/pull and scale to your hearts desire! macdane's tutorials are amazing to help you get started with some of the sketchup stuff.

I'm working on a new top secret ship right now.... I'm pretty sure it's creative, as I've never seen one like it before... no more details until it's final unveiling ;)
