Sorry to bring up an old post, but I am going to ask someone to export this world, and I wanted to see if any one had some last minute feedback. Some of you might not remember this world, but it is the world I made when I just got Unity. It is only terrain, not like any of the new, spectacular, innovative worlds coming out today. This world is supposed to be like freestyle, and all of the standard worlds, yet be different in a way. -Gub

This is my first world ever! I just downloaded unity about a week ago and I played/worked around with it for a while and came out with this.
 
I'd be thankful for any suggestions!
I think it's Almost done and when it is I'll post another link for it. If someone tells me how I'll post the link to a single player unity web player, but as of now, I'm not sure how.

It's a pretty nice start. One thing you need to do is make the terraforming a little more unique. It'd be pretty cool to drive around as it is, but you need a little more un-conformity. Perhaps some smooth patches of hills, with little craters and the likes. The islands should also be a little more user-friendly so to speak, that is they need a bit of smoothing in some areas so they can be easily driven on.
 
To create water, click and drag the daytime water asset onto the map (from the assets/projects folder,) and then using inspector adjust position (x, y, z, coordinates) scale, and rotation (not very relevant in this case.) This can be slightly difficult for someone who's absolutely new to unity, but its a relatively simple interface.  Do not be discouraged if the water asset doesn't appear at first, it is likely either very tiny in relation to your world, is below the world, or covered by part of your terrain, which as said can be solved with asset adjustment. The daytime water asset looks like this:
Then, to create a texture, simply navigate to the terrain interface, click the little brush symbol, and click ''edit textures''>''add texture'' and then choose and customize your texture.

Indeed they do, thanks to a script from Achilles (i hope this works).  It usually takes time before it starts working, so do not expect immediate results.

You mught consider making ramps to the center of each pothole as I'm not sure a tank could make it past the jagged peaks.

Wow, looking stellar gub! I think it's almost gotten there. The texture really matches the world, and I think ''mesa'' or ''potholes'' would best suit it.

I'm liking the way this is turning out. If you haven't already, you might want to move the light to where it's not directly over the center of the map, to give it some shadows and stuff.

When I clicked on the post, a message box popped up displaying '-1' on it and when I clicked ok, it popped up like 20 more times...

Sorry... I can't help with that... I just do basic javascript and macros in Excel... and a few other similar things. I know absolutely no HTML, but I plan on it soon. I also want to learn C++ and other basic stuff.

Hate to burst your programming bubble, FC, but aren't you the one who blasted be for adding code to posts where I didn't get permission? Right now it seems very hypocritical of you to blast me and then do it yourself on someone else's post. Plus, you already have your own test page (html.plexpedia.com), so couldn't you have used that before you came over to Mars to test your code?

You need to go to file- new scene. Don't go to new project. Then go to terrain-create terrain and you can edit the terrain from the inspector. If you have more questions pm me I'll try to answer them but you'd be better of talking to someone else anyway

It's looking very cool! I think this may be a major success. :) Be sure to add a little bit of bumpiness to all the flat parts, though, just ot make it feel more terrain-like.

Apart from the texture, it seems like it's pretty good. Try to smooth the edges of the potholes and it will be great.

I have a few questions for everybody about your suggestions and the world.
 
  • Do you like the texture on the inside of the potholes? Any suggestions on that?
  • Should I Make a new bigger world with more potholes? If I did, then should I include other kinds of terrain with the potholes, and what kinds of terrain should these be?
  • Do you like the water? (I personally don't). How can I make it lava instead? Would lava be a suitable replacement?
  • Any other suggestions about the textures or anything else is also fine!
Suggestions and comments are very helpful! I need them to continue so I'm not lost!

Gub, Have you been using the Whirld Release? It contains all the Mars Textures, and a way to test the world as well. The post of the Whirld Project is here. If you need help, try looking through the comments, or post here with a question.
 
P.S. You'll want the 100215 Release.

Well since I have no sense, I did a long and roundabout way to the lava, creating new entities and all that.
 
What you probably want to do is take the simple water, and change the colouring to red or something like that.

The "candy" like texture on the inside of the potholes bothers me.  It seems... odd.  I liked the brown rock personally.

The lava looks great.

Other suggestions...  make the paths a little higher.  That way if you fall, you are going to have a hard time getting back up.  Even if it's only a meter higher then it currently is.

i liked the old colouring of your map, as it's not like you have to go with mars textures only, as i sure didn't use any of them on my mars ruins, and the main texture i used, was called Mars dirt or something
 
 
you don't have to go with a mars look, as it's your world so feel free to use what ever texture you choose to use, yes other people may not like that texture, but then so what, you can't please everyone

@ Gub - This is very cool! I would urge you to consider three things;
 
* Ramps or some way for tanks to drive into the center of the potholes
 
* Take it easy on the red color, I like the water best
 
* Make sure there is enough light, easy on the shadows. Though they look neet, shadows can really reduce visibilty.

My only problem is how grassy the paths are - Wouldn't paths that close be burned up?
 
Try making the paths dominant in lavarock, and then maybe a tint of grass, and dirt along the center.

See some of those pitch-black areas behind some of the peeks? Try adding some weak lighting around there to help out, if you can. Other than that, it will be just wondertastic.

EDIT: Just read what bammed this post in the first place!
 
I'd be happy to do an export when syn3h comes out. Until then, Unity 3 asset bundles are not compatible with those of Unity 2 -- According to my theory, at least.
 
(Mars is currently based on Unity 2. Syn3h will be Unity 3)
 
P.S. Congrats on more than 100 comments! :D *late congrats, I know. :P*

Thanks. Since I have a whole bunch of worlds that I want to export, I might just download the free trial sometime after, Syn3h comes out and export the worlds myself. (Only if someone tells me how).

you should make a volcano or some other unique features somewhere in there 2 set it apart from other lava themed worlds. Most lava themed worlds have a unique feature (freestyle, fais sunken wastes, , etc.) other than that it is great
