As of late, many people have been embedding unity webplayers into the posts they make on the MarsXplr forum.  I am not going to say that this is a bad thing, but it does cause a few problems which I would like to address.

First of all, it makes the forum incredibly laggy, and makes it very tough to actually read the post that you initially clicked on.

Secondly, this lag makes it very hard to navigate off the page.

It is my polite request that we stick to using links on the MarsXplr forum, and do not embed.

Finally, someone else states my longtime annoyance with the embed unity eating my keyboard shortcuts. When I had stated it before, I was told to suck it up. But, since the topic is being brought up, that's my opinion on the matter.

If you go to Forrest Johnson's blog, he has a neat interface to load/unload webplayers. By default they are all unloaded: a click activates the one you want.

I disagree. I noticed this too and developed a "hide/show" link which makes the player appear and disappear easily. This reduces the lag to none and makes it quite easy to navigate off of a page.

If the forum is lagging, that's your problem.

I have seen one.  And it took me 3 times as long to load it then when it was just a webplayer.

I don't think you have actually seen the "show/hide" link. Its only been in 2 posts which were posted by me 3 months ago.

The Show/Hide link works great. If you look, it doesn't contact Dropbox (Where the player is stored) until you Unhide it, and it stops when it is hidden. I am able to use the keyboard navigation shortcuts while it is hidden as well. 2 thumbs up!

Plop this puppy into your post's HTML, and replace the http://url.com/mygame.unity3d with the direct url to the .unity3d file. (To get this, look at the URL for the html file, and replace .html with .unity3d (Unless you renamed your html file to something else, in which case, get the directory of your html file, and replace the mygame.html with the original export name you used, and then add a .unity3d to the end of the name)).

To make things simpler, instead of uploading both the HTML file, and unity3d file from a web build, only upload the .unity3d file, and use the URL that your uploader returns to you.

<a id="toggle" href="javascript:tog();">Run WebPlayer</a></div>

<div id="unityembedder">http://url.com/mygame.unity3d*900x500</div>

<script type="text/javaScript" src="http://www.geiodo.com/smartembed.js"></script>

Yah, another thing is that everyone was using the old IFRAME technology that I introduced before I learned about the embed. I didn't have the chance to tell people how to use the Unity code to embed it directly.

One note though, this embed STILL will make the page laggy; it doesn't matter whether its an IFRAME embed or the other type, the browser will still have to process the information on the page.

The only way is to use the show/hide link I mentioned.

Actually, achilles, that is untrue. :) The page will only lag if the web player is shown.

Ahh, I didn't know your code hid the player - I thought it was just an embedding code...

I agree that we should transition to links, too. My computer has enormous lag because of a small graphics card. (and the fact that Unity is slow in Safari... and I hate Firefox and IE :P )
