A game concept i have. New Pics as well. New Link.

Hello all,

First off, I have a contest proposal. I am going to let you, the community, make different aspects for my game IF you'd like to.

I may or may not put your design in, depending on how well and what you design. So think on what you want to make. :)

The "House of Hack"

I have a link at the bottom of the page.

Ok, so mods, don't hide this right away. I have a point.

I've decided that now, since its been about 2 years since I started playing, I'd start creating my own game. The reason I post this is so I can get some feedback from trusted sources.

Storyline:

In the game, the player is a hacker in the cybernet, trying to hack into various locations to gain information or reach new destinations. Of course, a scripting game would be boring, so the player is a "cyber", meaning they physically appear in the cybernet (pics below). In the game, the player must fight anti virus software, programming, and hardware. At some points, larger, more advanced techs will come for "boss battles".

Concepts:

The "Hacker" is attempting to break into the secret tech military force, otherwise known as "Enitech". You'll have to play it when I finish to see why. :)

Ideas, Suggestions are welcome. I have pics:

sounds cool, but does the "hacker" do any programming things, or since he is a cyber does he just fight things? How does the game-play work?

Yes, the hacker has a home base where he can upgrade parts if he has money, skills, and knowledge.

I'll post pics of anti-vi and programs when I finish them.

Interesting (still don't approve of non-related Mars stuff with guns especially), but maybe you should make the legs less blocky and have more separate plates of armor. Good luck animating the walking, jumping, running, crouching etc cycles ;)

The legs are both composed of 4 pieces of armor. The Upper body will be one set, and I'm not sure about the arms.

I wasn't so sure about the cybergun, but I decided to go with it since there isn't any blood. It's just disappearing metallic software. :)

Maybe it should be a button to bring up the phone.  You know, as a little pause thing.  Sort of like the Pipboy in Fallout 3.

How bout a custom built Control Console that opens doors inside the house of Hack. Well it would do more than open doors. Like monitor temperature, energy input, supplies... You get the point...

It doesn't have to be buildings. It could be sculpture, scenery, walkways... Whatever.

You can even make your own house if it fits the style.

I don't think you understand the scale of this project. I'm not just getting people to do stuff for me, I'm asking for help from people who wish to give it. I have to do all the scripting and game concept still.

I have something to say.  I'm not a common member of the Mars society, so skip this if you don't really care.

I love the budding of a game on the internet.  Nowadays, large corporation developers have impunity.  They act as though, no matter what horrible crap they make the consumer put up with, that they deserve your money.  Occasionally there is a worthwhile game for sale, and it gets bought accordingly.  But in modern times, most new video games are a flaming pile of crap.

Now, as to why they wind up sucking - it doesn't vary much.  Some games have plots worse than Avatar's (face it, it did suck, even though there was awesome cgi) and others have the most frustrating gameplay mechanics ever.  Also, there's the infamously buggy category.  Take almost any failing game, and its problems fit into those categories.  But what causes them?  These things could be fixed.  Why doesn't that happen?  Let me tell you.  Companies.

In the current generation of gaming, all games fit into two categories: high quality graphics or free.  Anything in the middle usually fails.  Again I speak in generals, but still.  Anything without an "Ooo, shiny" factor seems to be discontinued.  But what is the cost of implementing next gen graphics?  The average cost to produce a game is 2.5 mil.  That's a huge commercial game.  But in reality, they aren't actually buying the graphics, they're paying the people who MAKE the graphics.  Not exactly cheap.  Hiring so many employees for a game means that somewhere, the budget must be slashed just to get the development rolling.  Nowadays, that money comes out of plot development and quality.  After all, never have I ever seen a commercial for a game that described the story and showed real gameplay.  It's all cutscenes and inaccessible camera angles.

To shorten it, for a dev company, money is the goal.

Now, tying it back to what you are making.  Now people should please focus here.

You are developing a (freeware?) game on the internet, with the help of - the internet.  This means that in reality, there is no budget.  You can patch and remold away.  Instead of spending thousands on advertisements, word of mouth will do.  Need help?  Slap it on a forum.  Want someone to review a script?  Let people search for plotholes.  Want level designs?  Speak, and others hear.  You can, in effect, keep going at this game for as long as you want with as much help as people want to give at the cost of the electricity going into your computer.

About the plot.
If you make a story, have an open one.  Don't make a universal karma slider where if you kick Ted and help Fred, you come out equal.  Please don't make false choices.  Make motivation for what you're doing.  Have a backstory.

About bugs.
If there is a glitch, or if there can be a glitch, make a window that sends messages describing the problem.  If people can speak up about something, they should.

About the game mechanics.
Nobody wants a run & gun without difficulty choice.  Nobody wants to deal with a cover system that locks them in place or slows them down.  And if you implement multiplayer, please put in character customization and a real lobby.  And some host tools.

IN SHORT:
This looks awesome, but if you could make it better than a penny pinching corporation's game, I'd buy it.
So, be awesome.  Because this is.

Woah, new idea.

What if, because you are in a (network?), you have some special sensors that flip down.  For example, one of them is a pair of sunglasses which you need to find that let you see into lights.  Potential for a mini-game or hidden key there.  Maybe there's a pair of goggles that allow your character to see "glitches" that cause damage.  Sort of like little mines, a glitch would be invisible until hit, upon which it would pop into sight, beep a few times, and then blow up in your face.  Ooh, and a pair of yellow computer glasses (search computer glasses on thinkgeek.com, you'll see) that would permit the sight of coded doors.  A coded control panel could be hidden in the wall, an once pressed, a bunch of viruses fall onto you, but the exit opens.

And now I have a headache from all that thinking.  D'aww.
