A classic map featuring missile silos and underground bunkers.
Submitted By Achilles on 10/11/17

[Update] Grass details have been added to around the fence perimeter as well as around the silos. Also the windows of the checkpoints have been changed to a more reflective material. The web-player has been updated and is available at the link below.

[Update] A barbed wire fence and two gate checkpoints (one on either side of the base) have been added. A picture of the checkpoint and fence was uploaded to the slideshow below (the last picture). I'm currently working on the control center as well as props (cars, barrels, etc). I also managed to export a quick web-player to Dropbox - it's not fully optimized yet:

Hello everyone, I am proud to present to you my latest map: the Abandoned Silos. It's a capture the flag type map (red against blue) that is centered around six missile silos with two underground bunkers on either side of the map. The setting is meant to be post-war, so the silos have been forgotten in the current era of peace. Please note that this map is not yet finished; many things will be added in the near future:

- A barbed wire (razor wire) fence perimeter
- Oil drums and metal boxes in the bunkers and around the silos
- A control room bunker
- Burnt out tanker trucks as well as cars
- Weeds and other terrain details
- Signs (such as "Authorized Personal Only")

As always, comments, suggestions, and criticism is appreciated :D

[edit] Oh, and all models and UV maps were created by me (no assets were taken from the asset store) except for the nice low-poly barbed wire on the fence.

Here's some pics - I decided to go with embedding it this time to conserve space on this page and Aubrey's server.

Alternatively, you can click here to go directly to the photo album.

We need a new adjective for these type of worlds, something along the lines of TOTALLY AWESOME!

Pre-tay good. Okay, I admit they don't look like giant toilets anymore, but add some variation between silos a bit more... uhmmm... Also, maybe make the map larger?

Awesome Achilles!

I'm interested to know how you embedded those chambers inside the terrain.

Embedding the silos into the terrain was not too complicated, actually. First I flattened the terrain heightmap to 60 or so (Terrain --> Flatten Heightmap) and then used the "Paint Height" tool (with the height was set to 0) and a hard brush to lower the terrain around the silos until they were not showing. This formed a "pocket" for the silos to fit in cleanly. Here's pic with the silos disabled:

Nice job! I think some roads going away from the base would be nice though.

Ah, good idea, I'll probably make a worn-out dirt road with some cement roadblocks leading away from the base.

Nice! I like that you've been making some smaller more detailed worlds than what we were seeing recently, and this might be the best yet.

the textures in this map are beautiful Achilles. Is this only achievable with unity 3? And how did you get those long fluorescent lights? Make 'em? Again, beautiful work Achilles. Any independant games in the works?

Thanks! Everything except the lightmaps are achievable in Unity 2.6 (though you theoretically could do the lightmaps in an external application and import them into Unity). The long fluorescent lights were modeled in modo with a point light to create the glow-ly light effect (the point lights were disabled after lightmapping the glow in).

@Achilles

I wasn't talking about the silos, I was talking about the rooms let in to the sides of the two hills.

The bunkers used a similar method like the missile silos; I carved a large "pocket" into the terrain and stuck the bunker into it. I then used modo to model a "fake" terrain which covers the hole in the terrain where the bunker is fit into. The terrain created in modo uses the same texture as the terrain and I tried to blend it seamlessly with the ground around it.

Thanks - I actually got the idea to make a missile silo world from playing with some friends a year or two ago in that MW2 map. I couldn't really remember much about how it looked, so the models and textures the Abandoned Silos probobly doesn't resemble anything from that map.

One thing I just thought of...

If it is a CTF map, the bases are only 50 ft apart. There needs to be an easier way to defend your base if so. Perhaps a method of closing the blast doors, and the enemy must first go somewhere else and cut off the power supply or something, that opens the doors, and then attempt to capture the flag? I don't know. Just a little sometin'.

Ah, good point. I was actually thinking it would be easy to defend the base as there is only 1 entrance point (which creates a bottle-neck). I might use the control room to play some sort of role in the overall strategy of the game.
