Mars Explorer, admin, Official, 2.0

Greetings everyone!

I am excited to announce that 2.0 will soon be a reality.

Unity's annual game development challenge is coming up once again, and in it's honor, Mars Explorer is going to receive it's largest upgrade ever.

Between now and October 5th (the UA2009 final build deadline) - I will be working to fine tune everything that has been introduced in the 1.99 series - custom Whirlds, a completely new interface, and so much more. On that date, everything goes live!

2.0 is tremendously exciting to me in many different ways, one of which is monetization :)
Mars Explorer will always be free, but I am favorably considering the creation an "elite" group of members who get to pay around $15 for cooler looking "Sponsor" name badges and possible exclusive access to OS native Mars Explorer applications. What do you think of the idea? I have no plans to implement it in the near future, but a significant income would help Mars Explorer grow like nothing else.

» Play Mars Explorer 2.0 Beta

All the best,

-Aubrey

New features:
  • Completely new vehicle materials!
All vehicle materials have been redesigned with the capability to adapt to any specified color. Vehicles are assigned a random color when entering a game, and players can customize this color to whatever they desire in their "Game Settings" panel! The quarry automatically fades to a highly visible green color, which is GREAT for hide-and-seek games where name tags are camouflaged and you previously didn't know who you should be watching out for. The random color generation algorithm has some mechanisms in place to prevent truly hideous colors from being assigned, but don't complain to me if the computer thinks you would look good in a hot pink buggy. Perhaps you would! :)
Colors are preserved when players switch vehicles, allowing you to associate a specific color with each of your friend's and enemy's play styles for a whole new level of dogfight fun! Tank treads even change their color - that was interesting to build...
  • Authenticated user's names are now suffixed by a + sign, and guests with a -. This should greatly reduce any confusion about whether or not someone is "real".
  • Laser sound effects! Still under construction, but they already a great sense of realism and excitement to laser battles

These are all great ideas, but I disapprove of making OS native apps inaccessible to normal users. ≈o

Listen, you don't have to implement my buggy. This one is very cool with the color changes (Unless, of course, you want to implement it.)

A Price to pay
2 days - 5,583v
Posted 2009/09/24 - 14:43 GMT
Aubrey, I usually don't make opinions about games until I see them, but I have to find out about this price.

$15? How would us european players do that? Convert it to 10 euros? I can't pay online, and I can't send it to an address, so does that mean only Americans get to be special?

Also, the point of the game that drew so many players was that it was free. If you go all club penguin, with "benefits" for members, I won't be able to play anymore, because of the difference between the people with tricked out name tags and people who can't afford or can't send $15 a month on mars explorer.

(I need the app to play, btw, or else the load time freezes my computer.)

I'm not in favor of this.

Red;

Currency exchange rates shouldn't be a difficulty - there are lots of online payment processors who are already set up to handle this. If you can't get the money to me in any way, then yes, you don't get to be special :)

I have NO intentions of providing a direct competetive advantage to sponsoring players over free players. No faster vehicles, no weapon enhancements, no augmented reality, etc.

The motive for sponsoring would be that you get to feel good by supporting a game you love, that you get recognition for this, and that you might get access to a "pro" section of the forum, possible exclusive downloadable game app, etc. If you really can't play in your browser, that is a seperate but major issue! Please start a thread with your software and hardware details and I'll try to get it sorted out.

The price I mentioned above was just an idea, but that range of price would be a one time (or possibly annual) payment.

VERY AMAZING UPDATES!

however, could the color sliders not readjust?

it blocks you from some of the cooler colors!

(fire color/ice)

and yes, you can still get to them if you mess around long enough!

but can we please turn off the color limits?

(besides, if someone looks REALLY BAD they will most likely get a laser in the face XD)

OH, and one more thing!

well two acctually :P

could you make insane settings possible again PLEASE? (  how can you say no to this face?  -  @.@)

and the other is that the original levels need to be put back in considering that this is the 2.0 version.

Of cource this is all up to you,

This is just my opinion! :P

Enjoy!

(Enjoy what I don't know :P)

Aubrey,
I don't believe that 2.0 is currently PC friendly, as I keep crashing on my pc every 10 minutes while playing.
First two times while I was tuning my buggy to my prefered solid white color hehe...
The third time I was just playing then it went, exactly 10 minutes had passed though.
Any explanation?

It's now much worse, I can't join games with more than 3 players in them now,
and my games by myself just spontaneously crash every 10 minutes still.

Aubrey, I'm begging of you to find out what is going on in PC world that isn't allowing me to play marsxplr.

I have tried using different browsers, restarted, uninstalled and reinstalled unity, reset everything in all my browsers,
refragmented my entire computer, I don't know what else to do Aubrey.

I would like to say that, i like the custom colors, love them, so much in fact that i hate when my buggy turns green when i get quarry. Id prefer my name only change. A custom colored xorb would be awesome as well. And i'd also prefer that all vehicles started as default color, unless you set it to a certain color, so you wouldnt have to reset it every time.

Also, rams are still randomly not working.

It's very nice and exciting, thumbs up.

Hyper-Sound doesn't work! Also, I'm not going to be able to "sponsor" Mars Xplr because 1: My parents probably wouldn't let me 2: I wouldn't know how and 3: I'm only 10, so I don't have a credit card or anything.

So, I'm not a big fan of the whole "sponsoring" thing.

Other than that, Keep up the good work, we love what you're doing, don't stop!

Just to set the record straight, Aubrey said the game would still be free, you would only be paying for extra member benefits. You dont have to pay, but if you did, you would receive those benefits.

Im perfectly ok with the pay-for-extra-things thing, as long as we can still play free without those benefits.

I love the ability to choose colors! maybe instead of just sliders you could click a button and a color wheel appears, and you can choose a color from that.

The laser sound effects were cooler than I expected. Other sounds should be added too, like motor sounds when you accelerate and collision sounds when you ram.

Hey Aubrey.
I love this version. The colors and sound effects are great.
I think that if you do make an "elite" membership or something of the sort, you should keep the benefits pretty useless to actual gameplay. Perhaps, and this is just an idea, flame decals or racing stripes and things like that. Please don't make the downloadable app exclusive, that's how i normally always play.
Thanks again!

October 5, 2009! Mark your calendars, guys!

Btw, you can make gold color by lowering blue all the way, raising up green and red, and then lowering red until it looks like gold. Then, you can make a matching accent by raising all except blue.

Also, I wanted to share my dream for 2.0. Someday, I hope to drive a green MarsJet over the freestyle volcano

Aubrey, I have two questions:

1. If I ban one player, what is the collateral damage? In other words, how many others in that player's neighborhood, city, area are also banned based on the banned player's IP?

2. Please, please, please consider saving unique Unity maps for Whirld Project EXACTLY AS IS, re: Velociraptor and Tropical Paradise  and not Marsitize them?

Aubrey  this version is the best ever. ever.

EVER

I have to comment twice to say how extremely fun it is!
But i have some ideas...
When you set your buggy color, there would be a palette off in the corner where you could place and save your colors. it would save them to your account so you could always have your favorite color!

And I'm not too sure about the buggy turning green to show that it's the quarry. I like my buggy color and I don't want it to be overridden by neon green. :)

Any news on the jet? I am going to wrap it up, try to convert it to blender format, and send it to you via pm or maybe email if you gave me your email... that way I could attach it directly instead of sending you to some site to download it... I have some info and I will PM you about it instead of saying it. So check your PMs! Thanks for your time Aubrey, (BTW I don't mean to be pushy about the jet, but It seems there is no other way to ask you of the plans (If any) about the jet... lol :))

I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT 2.0 THAT I'm GONNA GO PLAY IT RIGHT NAO!!!!

THIS VERSION IS AWESOME!!! Best version ever. But the price thing... eh, I... well... just don't know. I mean, ultimately it's your choice, but the idea of special benefits (albeit not in-game) would have me feeling left out. I KNOW I would not be able to do this, and the "elite thread" I think would be... hmmm... a hamper. If we do do this, I would at least not have an "elite thread", it would just be a handicap to all the players who didn't pay. Srry to shed a bad light on things, but....

Aubrey, I tend to sympathize with what both Tigerstorm is saying AND with your situation.

I want to donate but I don't want to be a Star-Bellied Sneech with a trick name badge. (green does nicely)

How about encouraging donations but also sell merch?

T-shirts, coa coa mugs, hats, vehicle models, game sound ringtones, Chuck Taylors, etc?

On the other hand, how much money is spent by Mars users on the iTunes store, Red Bull or on their phone?

$15 one time only or once per year couldn't hurt some players THAT much

I'm having troubles with the new version (or maybe firefox, or both)...

I've been experiencing three types of crashes. First, my browser randomly exits in the middle of a game, without leaving an error message or anything. Second, sometimes the instant a player joins, my computer freezes. Third, my computer occasionally freezes when I try to join a game. (I can see the stars and my little blue arrow on the mini-map, but nothing else).

Has anyone else been experiencing problems like this?

As for paying, i have mixed feelings. Part of me says "Very cool, and you deserve money Aubrey!" and part of me says "No! I love how it is free!".

Awesome. Will we be able to change the color of the marsjet when it comes out in 2.0? I like the idea of a voicechat. The payment should be a one time only payment. I like the idea of a 'Pro' thing, but maybe a $20 one time only payment would be better. One payment of $20 and you're set for life.

Take the buggy performance, laser sounds, custom colors, ban button, and 2.0 interface into 1.9.8 and it's the best it's ever been.

I prefer 1.9.8 above this version, and personally believe 1.9.8 is better than 2.0.
It was more stable, all the worlds were there, servers worked fine for the most part.

I believe if you add the color choice and ban button to 1.9.8,
That would be the best version, and most complete version.
Just my opinion.

Also, I'm still crashing like crazy in 2.0,
Any fix to this Aubrey?

Also, what happened to the completion of the sea monster and sky monster?
What happened to installing all the old worlds into 2.0?
What happened to all that Aubrey?

Shush with the jet man. Im fairly sure it will be in by the 5th but if not, oh well. There's plenty more versions to come.
The thing is, 1.9.8 DIDNT have this stuff. Each version is better than the last because they add to each other.

Requests, suggestions:  (pssst. I know this is the wrong time for requests but the ideas arrived tonight)

(√) Fly in lava sea enabled
This was my most exciting flight experience in a long time and a terrific potential strategic addition!

(  ) Vehicle-aligned lasers enabled
Off by default to reduce "Goofy-Shooting" which is the current cheap point grabbing (when Quarry) and/or mass NQS by un-disciplined pilots *coughnghtflyr* when they keep outside lasers blazing and flounder around or loop, randomly hitting most many vehicles in the area.

Enabled, it could designate mouse/trackpad for lookaround only, reproducing fixed-sight bi-plane-style dogfights where one must steer their vehicle precisely at their target to land a tag.
I'll say it before someone else does: "Lol! bye-plaane layzorz!!! O_o"   There, I said it.

When fully textured, the stunning Unity Island will be my new home.  :)

***** Ladies and Gentleman *****

As you can see, tremendous progress has been achieved over the last several days.
The Whirld library now supports terrains, terrain textures, parametric objects (think launch volcano with particle effects and variable force launches), .obj meshes, .obj .mtl material libraries with custom textures, custom world rendering settings, world environmental presets, custom world headers, and much more! I have also fine tuned several of the existing worlds, and hope to add one or two more before the release.

Tomorrow - I plan to finish the implementation of terrain vegitation maps, perform as much bug testing as possible, and record some great demo videos with everyone. On Monday, we launch!

There wasn't quite enough time to pack a jet or extensive bug testing into this release, but don't worry - they are right around the corner :)
Unity will be releasing a major upgrade to the Unity Editor (2.6) any day now, and it will enable me to better isolate bugs and conduct game performance tuning much more effeciently.

Over the last several days, I have updated the 2.0 webplayer many times with cutting edge features that weren't always fully tested... If, after reading this, you experience serious new bugs - please let me know about them! I am aware that players occasionally stop responding, that servers can't be connected to some times, and that the master list server is unreachable every once in a while -  but these are issues that I have minimal control over without rewriting all of Mars Explorer's networking to use a different, third party networking library. I am doing everything I can about these issues. If you experience a bug - especially a non-loading world - please provide me with all the information about your system and your procedure necessary for me to replicate the issue.

All the best,

-Aubrey

Nice!

Unfortunatley, I just found out that meshes rendered inside Unity are limited to 65,000 vertices. This won't prevent your mesh from making it into the game, but it will require that your mesh gets split up into smaller meshes :)

Finish it up, get all the UVs right, split it into smaller meshes, and you will have a really cool world!

I don't know what UV's are. Does this mean the more than 65,000 vertices are allowed, just not on one single mesh?

I'll see if I can lower the face/Vertices count now

All right! you can send it again :)

Sorry - my bad. When I said UVs (coordinates for texture mapping), I was thinking of face normals - which really is the vertice winding order for each face triangle.

Anyway, you just need to make sure that all the faces "face" in the right direction. If you see some faces that look dark from the side that the vehicle will be interacting with them, select them and use Blender's "flip normals" command.

Unity only renders faces from one direction, so if you want to create an object that can be seen from it's inside and outside, you need to create an inside and outside wall for it that each face different ways.

Everything I can possibly think of to solve Mars Explorer problems:

When loading a version or map or when hosting/playing, give your computer it's best chance.
Most of what I say here is for both Mac and PC.

* Run ONLY Mars Explorer! Any additional programs like chat, myspace, iTunes, youtube and such add work for your computer to do. This goes for browser AND app versions. Check for programs that are set to automatically open at login.

* NEVER, EVER minimize the page and NEVER, EVER go to another program when hosting! This gives all your players a Not Responding and stops the game cold. Plus, it prevents anyone from joining your game.

* Get ALL FILES off of your desktop, into a folder and stashed away. Your computer has to work to keep files like music, pictures and especially movies on the desktop. Some shortcuts are fine.

* Check your hard drive space. Macs begin to run slower when whey fill up storage space and probably PCs too.

* If on PC, try de-fragging your hard drive.

* Run ONLY one browser window.

* Clear your browser cache.

*Trash your old Mars Explorer app using AppZapper to remove associated files.

* Clear your browser "cookies". (I know you want to but please don't clog Aubrey's thread with dum stuff about cookies okay?)

* Try a different browser.

* Test your connection speed and post it for people to comment on to learn if it's fast enough.
 FREE Speed Test

* Restart your computer. Sometimes it helps. Macs perform tiny self-repairs when started up.

* Shut your computer down, unplug all wires including the power cord and let it just sit for three minutes.

*Try  Resetting PRAM and NVRAM if on a Mac.

* Some cordless phones (when in use) can interfere with wireless routers, even from a neighbor's house. You might try bypassing your router by plugging the Ethernet wire directly into your computer.

* If you live in a household with multi computers on a wireless network, try to play when only one    computer can be used for Mars Explorer.

* Set automatic backups on apple Time Machine for when everyone (including you) will be asleep.

All right Kruncher!
:)

Dude: Do crashes occur when loading worlds, or just randomly as you are playing the game? What browser are you using, and can you find any procedure that consistently triggers a crash?
When I release the native 2.0 app, it should crash much less than the browser version does - as it seems that apps can recover from some exceptions that browser players can't.

It crashes randomly as I'm playing the game,
I've found no procedure that consistently causes a crash either,
It just randomly crashes, no matter what rendering mode,
no matter how many players, no matter what world,
it just randomly crashes.

The browser I'm using is flock,
but I've tried many browsers before it,
including firefox, chrome, opera and internet explorer,
I have yet to try safari, but will try it now.
No consitency when it crashes, it's just basically random as I'm playing.

One thing i'd like changed, the buggy can climb easier and faster than the tank. This is not supposed to be so, since the tank was made from traction up steep hills. I think the tank should be able to go up vertical walls and maybe even upside down.

Ok, love the new version. I'm just gunna skip to my bug questions, though.

1. For the longest time, I have been unable to load Lava Racer. It seems I shall never see the light of that glorious landscape ever again. It still won't load in 2.0. It downloads all the necessary data, it goes to initialize the world, my computer makes processing sounds then my browser starts taking up tons of memory. That's it, that's my sad journey to Lava Racer.

2. Just out of curiosity...where'd the Sea Monster go? Is it out at sea? *confused*

Tried everything possible on a PC up there, krunch. Re-installed Unity, tried different browsers (Safari, Internet Explorer), defragment, re-boot, Reset Safari, and cleared everything possible for a browser.

I've loaded Lava Racer before, I just haven't been able to in a long while. Let's see, probably back in 1.9.6-1.9.7 I was able to load it. *shrugs* It's not the computer's capabilities, I can load everything else. IDK, just felt I'd finally report it.
